THIS WEEK @ META

WED, 01/10 CAMBODIAN FILMMAKER'S NIGHT
Two documentaries by young Cambodian filmmaker Chuon Sarin: "Sbaek Thom"
(about Giant Shadow Puppetry) and a documentary about the annual "Cambodian
Living Arts"-Festival. At "Phare Ponleu Selapak" Artschool in Battambang
(2007) over 300 young musicians and Khmer masters came together… (Filmmaker
will be present at screening!)

THUR, 02/10 JADE: THE STONE OF HEAVEN
Amazing "Discovery"-documentary by German filmmaker Georg-Peter Mueller
(Living Films) about the Chinese love for Jade and the struggle of ordinary
people to earn a living through the hunt for "green gold". Filmed in China
and Myanmar.

FRI, 03/10 GENOCIDE IN RWANDA
The doc "PIECING TOGETHER RWANDA'S PAST" (2007, 21min) shows how propaganda
was used to incite violence leading to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. The BBC
feature "SHOOTING DOGS" (2005, 110min) by Hugh Dancy is based on real
events: On 11th April 1994 over 2500 Rwandans were abandoned by the UN at
the "Ecole Technique officielle de Kicukiro" and later murdered by extremist
militias. (Q&A after screening –in coop. with Youth for Peace, DED)

SAT, 04/10 GUATEMALA: WHEN THE MOUNTAINS TREMBLE
Filmmakers Yates/Sigel shot this documentary (Guatemala/USA,1985, 82min) at
the height of a heated battle between the heavily-armed Guatemalan Military
and a nearly defenseless Mayan population with firsthand accounts by Nobel
Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchu. (Q&A after screening – in coop. with
Youth for Peace, DED)

SUN, 05/10 META MUSIC: JONI MITCHELL
"Shadows and Lights" was shot during an historic 1979 tour, where Mitchell
was at the peak of her powers. The band was a dream, including Pat Metheny,
Michael Brecker and the legendary, late, great Jaco Pastorius The playing is
so uniformly good that it is obvious everyone enjoyed working together.

KIDS & RUBBISH

HEllo, in november like every year Bhor all in Art Center organise a 17 days interactiv  festival ...
this time we are going to work on environemental problems and solution...
so please read this project and imagine what we could plan together....

Kids & rubbish

One of the big challenge of the years coming is to bring people to take more care about their environment. Plastic is soon to cover the planet, toxic chemical products are abandoned here and there next to rice fields or houses, fertilizers and pesticides are used without care of ground waters…..  Cambodian people get no clues about the real impact this will have on their future life… and would not if they don't get soon informations and education… Beginning by simple acts we all do every day could already change a lot.

The Bhor team and Mlop Tapang NGO are sensible to the situation and at their level they have started  already  to communicate on the issue, involving themselves in Cleaning Days at the beach, plastic collecting, art-recycling, awareness theater shows and more.

The need to do it on a bigger scale is obvious, it's enough to look around you anywhere... , so we planned «kids & rubbish»

The Project: A 3 weeks festival inside  and outside the BHOR building to bring concern to people about their environment through artistic performances and fun educative interventions.

A smart fast & fun way to communicate about how fragile is our planet…

As we did last year  for «all about addiction » the building is going to be fully  transformed by artists and during 3 weekends actors will offer you a creative  visit  of the exhibition  from 5 to 8pm…Every 6 mn, ten people get in, for a 25 mn tour…

And from 8 pm shows on the main stage…. As we are still preparing the event it is impossible to give you now a real program now but as of today we already know that "Mlop Tapang kids" (circus + theater from Kampong Som), "Mekong Pirates" (Phnom Penh funk), "Ceux qui Marchent Debout" (street fanfare from France), "Okun & the Tyrans" (Kompong Som rock), "Vanry Green Project" (Phnom Penh recycling arts ), "OCT" ( Sk'ville Khmer pop)  join us with skills & enthusiasm…

Proposed Period:             - Option one  from 14th to 30th of november

                                                - Option two  from 21st november to 6/7th december….

The Objective: Using an all arts approach with theater, graphics and music to catch public attention, we plan to both explain and clearly demonstrate the effects of pollution. From the consequences not only to self, but also  to surroundings, to life and wildlife. We want to give an opportunity for artists to share in a creative and social project; and for kids to be involved in a group concept, where they can educate and also learn.

We wish to give a wide vision of what is possible to change, how it affects whom, why it affects them and what are the resources.

Naturally we want the public to learn important lessons while discovering new ways of expression. We expect this outreach effort to have a significant effect on those who participate as well as on those who visit, and so will positively impact the continuing pollution problem in this city.

At the moment we are looking for partners to fill our budget and our programme.
How is it possible to become partners? Quite simple:

Share your artistic skills, knowledge, experience:

-       You may have some artistic expression or aptitude, fitting our purpose.

-       you have been already involved in environmental project and you have communication or experience to share…

-       you're connected with ngo's running awareness shows or wishing to create new ones on this topic.

Share your resources:

-       You or your department is able to provide some dingueling money to support this project, We are looking (like usually Bhor does) for little amounts with few more  partners (4 to 6)  Because our budget is in accordance with our purpose: NO WASTE….

Why should you join?
there are so many reasons to jump on the wagon…
First one, obviously, because we do not have a spare planet to spoil by tomorrow…
...And we don't have that much time to before these problems become huge.

Why  you should choose this project for your communication?
Just look the success of the «about addiction» event … full from the first till the last minute, 12 days in a row...  Friends bringing friends and kids coming back with the full family… And that was the Exhibition, inside. In front we had the big stage …(just look the pictures)…
Yes , we can say it had been a big success…. We are proud about it because we did built it together… as we were proud to do it with our partners: Mlop Tapang, Korsang Khmer &      Phare Ponleu Selpak with UNESCO support, Amrita with CARE support.

For the kids & rubbish project we are going to go further, with new topics and new partners….

Now, let's find out what we could share together…

We are waiting to hear from you!

New workshop in Prek Toal

From OSMOSE in Siem Reap:

Saray Tonle

From the 1st of August 2008 a new workshop has opened on the Water Hyacinth Handicraft Platform in Prek Toal.

During boat journeys to the bird sanctuary (next to Prek Toal) or the Tonle Sap Lake, tour operators can offer tourists an interesting visit to the new Water Hyacinth Handicraft workshop in Prek Toal.

It gives the tourists an opportunity to discover the work of the women and to support this fair trade project.

It is also a nice break on the daytrip, because this platform has a toilet and a lot of space to stretch ones legs!

Daily from 8.30 until 17.30 o’clock the women are showing in the workshop their weaving techniques and are also selling their handicraft products.
The tour guides can ask for Veasna, the sales assistant on the platform.

Location: The platform is situated next to the pagoda of Prek Toal. It will move some meters on the river during the year with the changing water level (see attached pictures, the big green roofed platform).

The Women of Prek Toal

The 30 women of Saray come from poor families or are the only source of income for the household.

For more information contact us
HP: 099 727 698 – Vorng
Email: saray@osmosetonlesap.net
Web: www.osmosetonlesap.net

The Fair Purchase: 100% Khmer Handicraft and natural material

The water hyacinth handicraft project does not only provide economical benefits but also ecological improvement: the more water hyacinths are used, the better is the environment. The aim of the SARAY project is to respect ethical and environmentally friendly practices and to foster the ongoing revival of Cambodian traditional skills. Buying a product made by the women of Prek Toal, not only helps them to diversify their incomes but also gives them a sense of pride and self-confidence.

OSMOSE NGO has revived the traditional water hyacinth handicraft. Since 2004, four training sessions were organized with support from the Belgium Technical Cooperation and the Asian Development Bank. The beneficiaries are a group of women in Prek Toal village.

OSMOSE further facilitated and supported the group for the selling and marketing of their products on the local market. In November 2006, the women created a cooperative and named it SARAY, a delicate yellow aquatic flower of the lake.

The Water Hyacinth

Originating from from South America and introduced on the lake, the Water Hyacinth is an invasive aquatic plant, becoming an increasing environmental issue on the lake. It grows extremely rapidly and forms dense floating mats paralysing the navigation in some areas of the lake.

Prek Toal village is a traditional fishing community living in floating habitation in a ‘deadlock bend’ of the Sangke River in Battambang province. At the beginning of the rainy season, enormous quantities of water hyacinth get stuck in the village, seriously disturbing all activities.

Why: The “Obama Bridge Project” is the brainchild of Meredith Wheeler, an American expat and Obama supporter who spearheaded the project from her home in rural France. Bridge venues have included the Pont Neuf in Paris, the Millennium Bridge in London, the Charles Bridge in Prague, the Pone Vecchio in Florence, Italy, the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Johannesburg, South Africa, and many other bridges across the world, including bridges in Tokyo, Sydney, Bangkok, Vancouver, and Buenos Aires.

“The enthusiasm of Americans around the world for Barack Obama comes right through in these photographs,” said Wheeler. “His election would do so much to restore the tarnished image of the United States.”

Sunday’s event is open to all residents, whether they are U.S. citizens or not.

Everyone who wants to show their support for Barack Obama is welcome. The idea behind this is that bridges unite opposite sides and bring people together, as we feel Obama will do, not only in America, but across the world.”
