WED, 01/10 CAMBODIAN FILMMAKER'S NIGHT
Two documentaries by young Cambodian filmmaker Chuon Sarin: "Sbaek Thom"
(about Giant Shadow Puppetry) and a documentary about the annual "Cambodian
Living Arts"-Festival. At "Phare Ponleu Selapak" Artschool in Battambang
(2007) over 300 young musicians and Khmer masters came together… (Filmmaker
will be present at screening!)

THUR, 02/10 JADE: THE STONE OF HEAVEN
Amazing "Discovery"-documentary by German filmmaker Georg-Peter Mueller
(Living Films) about the Chinese love for Jade and the struggle of ordinary
people to earn a living through the hunt for "green gold". Filmed in China
and Myanmar.

FRI, 03/10 GENOCIDE IN RWANDA
The doc "PIECING TOGETHER RWANDA'S PAST" (2007, 21min) shows how propaganda
was used to incite violence leading to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. The BBC
feature "SHOOTING DOGS" (2005, 110min) by Hugh Dancy is based on real
events: On 11th April 1994 over 2500 Rwandans were abandoned by the UN at
the "Ecole Technique officielle de Kicukiro" and later murdered by extremist
militias. (Q&A after screening –in coop. with Youth for Peace, DED)

SAT, 04/10 GUATEMALA: WHEN THE MOUNTAINS TREMBLE
Filmmakers Yates/Sigel shot this documentary (Guatemala/USA,1985, 82min) at
the height of a heated battle between the heavily-armed Guatemalan Military
and a nearly defenseless Mayan population with firsthand accounts by Nobel
Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchu. (Q&A after screening – in coop. with
Youth for Peace, DED)

SUN, 05/10 META MUSIC: JONI MITCHELL
"Shadows and Lights" was shot during an historic 1979 tour, where Mitchell
was at the peak of her powers. The band was a dream, including Pat Metheny,
Michael Brecker and the legendary, late, great Jaco Pastorius The playing is
so uniformly good that it is obvious everyone enjoyed working together.
