OTHER LOCAL ROCK'N ROLL NEWS:

Phnom Penh: Zombie Birdhouse on St. 278 has announced to close mid-April, which is a huge loss to all real rock music fans of Phnom Penh. The Swiss owner David has not revealed his future plans, but has said that four years of bar-keeping is now enough. It still remains unclear from where Zombie's charming regular gang can be found next, drinking cheap Pastis and listening to Motörhead, Iggy Pop, Ramones, Ted Nugent, Stormtroopers of Death etc. Stay tuned anyway. For "Zombie's Funeral" night with BnD 11.04., see the attached poster.

Phnom Penh: Taiwanese-owned ex-Zeppelin Café/Rock Zone, now Rock Bar has moved in March 2008 from next to Phnom Penh Hotel along the road to the Backpackerville to the Walkabout region of the St. 51 bar strip. At least for vinyl LP freaks, the new location is probably more convenient when nightclubbing in the heart of Phnom Penh. Apart from an impressive collection of 70s and 80s rock music from vinyl, probably also live music occasionally available.

Sihanoukville: Independence Hotel organised the first "Rock On The Beach" event on the Independence Beach on Saturday 22 March 2008 with the expat rock band Whack Daddy Down from Singapore as the main act and some local performers. The WDD band has thrown some gigs in Cambodia also before, including the Rock at Angkor Wat (RAW) festival in Siem Reap in 2003. According to local information, the event coincided with many simultaneous full moon parties in Sihanoukville, which resulted in an audience of a relatively modest size. However, there are plans to improve the concept further for the next time, has been heard from IH management.

REGIONAL ROCK'N ROLL NEWS:

Thailand: Phuk's PTK band plays Pattaya. The amazing house band of Bangkok's former popular Country Road II establishment, Phuk's PTK band, has moved to Pattaya after the CR II's building was demolished to give way for new high-rise development in the Sukhumvit area. According to the regulars, the band played literally until the end on the edge of the construction hole before the final excavator's hit arrived. But Phuk & co. still keep on rocking, of course. They have also played several times in Saigon during the previous years. So check'em out if you happen to be in Pattaya, the name of the place is still Country Road, what else.

Can you feel the Bass- before breakfast?

Open Evening Invitation

Thursday March 6th

FCC 6.30 til 7.30pm

Can you feel the Bass- before breakfast?

Looking for a follow up to an earlier series of pictures entitled "Early Morning Ballroom Dancing in China" (published in the London Saturday Times Travel Section) Nathan Horton went looking for it's Cambodian equivalent. Not quite sure what he was looking for he didn't need to look far. After being asked to cover ' A day in the Life of the Olympic Stadium ' by AsiaLIFE Magazine he discovered the great buzz of hundred's of Phnom Penh's early risers involved in some impromptu high energy aerobic exercise. In a great role reversal the upper terraces of the stadium became the visual spectacle themselves. Out of the darkness boomed a Khmer techno remix of   ' We are the Cheeky Girls ' and as the sun raised it revealed the silhouettes of both the young and the old, men and women marching their feet and pumping their arms in the air in a modern day praise of a new day dawning. The silhouetted shapes seemed to take on a life of their own and undoubtedly seemed to express something uniquely Cambodian. Only vaguely in sync their free spirited casual interpretation of the up-tempo music always carried the graceful trace of the omnipresent Apsara influence. Nathan was hooked and the rest was a labor of love. "Can you feel the Bass" is a homage to a great modern monolith, the Olympic Stadium, Apsara dancing that has morphed it's way into a modern day dance routine and music that makes people want to get out of bed in the morning.
