UNDERLYING

'Underlying' is the first traveling exhibition co-curated by four curators from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Vietnam. Their aim is to explicit the contextual interpretations and expressions of people living in this region through art practices, and to encourage an understanding among audiences of various nationalities. The curators from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Vietnam have interpreted the main theme, 'Underlying', based on contexts developed in their own locations, and present their results through the curatorial practice.

Short visits to the mind of teenagers turned into corporate slaves, each portraying also youth perception of values, conformism, peer pressure and consumerism - directed by filmaker/video artist Kautsar Anggakara, who will be present at the screening. (In English, 2004)

This thriller/drama involves the monitoring of the cultural scene of East Berlin in Mid 1980s till the reunification in 1989 by agents of the Stasi, the GDR's secret police. By Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck.

FOCUS CAMBODIA: "Concrete Visions" (2007), "Sold Out" (2006),
"Life's a Beach" (2005): Various Docs by Nico Mesterharm on the works of the Cambodian architect Vann Molyvann and the recent construction boom, on human trafficking and on the touristic and economic development of the beach town Sihanuokville – seen through the etes of a 16-year old fruitseller.

SET IN ASIA: EMPIRE OF THE SUN
Based on J.G. Ballard's autobiographical novel, this near-epic film tells the story of an English boy living in Shanghai when the Japanese invade in 1941. Separated from his parents, he survives in Soo Chow detention camp for British citizens, which is located next to an airfield. The boy develops a fascination and admiration for both the American and the Japanese pilots. By Steven Spielberg (In English, 1987, 154 min)
