Hi Art Lovers,
We would like to invite you to the
ON-GOING EXHIBITION
ART OF SURVIVAL
18 Cambodian and international artists reflect on the genocide.
This exhibition will be followed by an intercultural dialogue project with the German artists Horst Hoheisel and Sebastian Brand - in cooperation with the Goethe Institute Bangkok.
Art of survival - part II: Cambodia as the Unknown
The two German artists Mr. Horst Hoheisel (
www.horsthoheisel.net) und Sebastian Brandt went for an expedition to the unknown Cambodia. What is the present cultural identity of Cambodian people? In which kind does the gruesome heritage of the Khmer Rouge effect on their daily life and behavior? For this, the Germans kindly appeal to you to bring some small personal items (together with a short written statement about the item) to the Meta House (also anonymously), to get a collection of items, which symbolize Cambodian life and identity. This will be the basement for Hoheisels and Brandts art installation opening at February 12th. Beside this, the artists also focus on their own alien point of view through the subject of that project.
Hoheisel focusses artistically on the German Holocaust and the National Socialist Movement. Jointly with Andreas Knits, he elaborated and produced new shapes of monuments, which became known as 'counter-monuments' (
www.horsthoheisel.de). Besides the memory of open air landmarks, his works also belong to the patrimonies of several international museums (e.g. Museum of Modern Art, New York).
Horst Hoheisel presents his work and ideas on Tuesday (28th), from 7PM @ Meta House

"Triumph of the Will" by Leni Riefenstahl
Leni Riefenstahl's (in)famous propaganda film chronicles the 1934 Nazi Party Congress in Nuremberg/Germany. Riefenstahl's techniques, such as moving cameras, the use of telephoto lenses to create a distorted perspective, aerial photography, and revolutionary approach to the use of music and cinematography, have continued to influence movies, documentaries, commercials and music videos to this day, even as it raises the question over the dividing line between art and morality.
FRI, 01/02
DOCFEST: "BURMA ALL INCLUSIVE"
In this semi-documentary Austrian filmmaker Roland Wehap describes the situation in a country which has, as a result of its political situation, fo a long time been isolated from the outside world, but which is now slowly opening for tourism.
SAT, 02/02
FOCUS CAMBODIA: "THE BURNT THEATRE"
The Burnt Theatre, or Les Artistes du Théâtre Brûlé, is a French-Cambodian docudrama directed by Rithy Panh. A blend of fact and fiction, the film depicts a troupe of actors and dancers in the burned-out shell of Cambodia's former national theatre in Phnom Penh
SUN, 03/02
SET IN ASIA: PHANTOM INDIA (PART & 2)
Louis Malle called his gorgeous and ground-breaking documentary from 1969 the most personal film of his career. This extraordinary journey to India, originally shown as a miniseries on European TV, is infused with his sense of discovery as well as occasional outrage, intrigue, and joy. French w/English subtitles - presented by Florianne Wilde

Tim's 'What's On' Tips
Greetings!
Back from a pleasant 850km bike ride and ready to spread news about some events!
In the USA, politicians add "security" to any bill to pass it:
Homeland Security Bill, Chemical Security Bill, and (best of all)
National Environmental Security Bill. Barack Obama is hoping to change
that. Come to a party in his honor, watch some campaign video clips,
and enjoy an extended happy hour. 6-8 pm at the FCC. Invitation

The Bokor road is officially closed - go hike up to the top while you
can and support the kind park rangers' preservation efforts. Not
angry at any sort of large body of straightlaced, "elected" officials,
but bah.
Welp, back to work. Cheers!

Unmarketable: Brandalism, Copyfighting, Mocketing and the Erosion of Integrity
Wednesday, January 16, 5:45 pm
Srey Dim Conference Hall PUC South Campus
No. 184 Norodom Blvd. (South of Independence Monument)
The endless pursuit by corporations of the youth market demands that advertising and marketing experts construct new tactics to attract youthful buyers. This is especially relevant in Cambodia, where youth make up a significant portion of the population. Unfortunately, this means whole social networks, communal economies, and value systems are put in jeopardy. Sometimes, advertising and marketing spin completely out of control, and issues of social justice are trampled in pursuit of profits. Author Anne Elizabeth Moore will present a multimedia lecutre on the ugly underbelly of our globalizing world.
About the Speaker:
A resident of Chicago, noted author, publisher, journalist, and culture/media critic Anne Elizabeth Moore is the author of several books and numerous articles on media, advertising, gender, and culture.
A former editor of the Chicago-based alternative magazine PUNK PLANET, Ms. Moore’s latest book UNMARKETABLE: BRANDALISM, COPYFIGHTING, MOCKETING, AND THE EROSION OF INTEGRITY has won praise from numerous publications around the world, including the Los Angeles Times and The U.K. Guardian. Holder of a Master’s Degree from the prestigious School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin, Ms. Moore has lectured at several major universities in the U.S A., including Columbia College and the University of Illinois.

"Inside Deep Throat" by Bailey/Barbato ( USA)
In 1972, "Deep Throat" was made in a Florida hotel for 25000 dollars and became the most profitable film in motion picture history with a profit of over 600 million dollars. This great doc (made in 2005) covers the story of the film's stunning success and its hysterical opposition along with its dark side of mob influence. In short, the combined events would redefine the popular appeal of pornography… (Narration by Dennis Hopper!)
SAT, 05/01, 7 PM
FOCUS CAMBODIA
"Paper cannot wrap up embers" by Rithy Panh ( Cambodia)
Panh's works all have the same aim, which is to make films that 'restore a humanity that's been erased'. His newest doc relates the daily lives of prostitutes in Phnom Penh - teenage girls from the countryside, who are often sold by their own families, reduced to slavery for half a dollar a day, some of them infected with AIDS. He gives a voice, a name and a story to the more than 30 000 Cambodian women affected by this hidden tragedy.
SUN, 06/01, 7 PM
SET IN ASIA
"Mysterious Object at Noon" by A. Werasethakul (Thailand)
Inspiration for this film was the Surrealist storytelling technique known as "Exquisite Corpse", wherein a variety of writers would contribute to a story one sentence at a time, without knowing what the previous sentences were. Apichatpong Weerasethakul used the technique to interview disenfranchised people in rural and urban Thailand about their lives, with each person contributing to the ongoing story… (Thai, English subtitles. 2003, 85 min) – presented by Florianne Wild, Ph.D.
