This week brings quite a few important events @ Meta House
that we would cordially like to invite you to:
* ART: Our new exhibition ART OF SURVIVAL opens this Thursday (Jan 24,
6PM): Over 20 Cambodian artists (e.g. Chhim Sothy, Hen Sophal, Vandy
Rattana, Prum Vichet amm.) reflect on the Khmer genocide.
* PHOTOGRAPHY: We start a new project (THE UNIVERSAL CHAIR) with
photographer Arjay Stevens, who will also present his recent works at the
Meta House roftop (Tuesday, 7PM).
* MUSIC: 10-year old Khmer Soprano BOSBA PANH - the niece of filmmaker
Rithy Panh - is giving an unplugged concert on Wednesday, 7PM
'
* FILMS: This weekend we will screen the award-winning FLUTE PLAYER
(Fri, 7PM) about the life and visions of Khmer Rouge survivor Arn
Chorn-Pond, who founded the NGO Cambodian Living Arts and short films from
Africa (REEL PEACE, Sat, 7PM). Both presentations are part of our project
ART OF SURVIVAL as they depict artistic views and perceptions in/after
war times - followed by Roland Joffe's classic KILLING FIELDS, presented
by Florianne Wild within her SET IN ASIA cinema night.

TUE, 22/01, 7 PM ARTIST SPECIAL
Arjay Stevens (Germany)
Arjay Stevens is a German photographer, who lives and works in Cambodia
for over a decade. At Meta House Stevens will present selections from
previous exhibitions and his new project â?oThe Universal Chairâ?� â?"
a plastic object that can be found all over the world, from Angkor Wat
to Germany. Stevens is planning to involve Cambodian artists, who are
cordially invited to join the presentation.

bosbaPANH
Live @ Meta House: The youngest Khmer coloratura soprano, age 10. Her
band (â?oLa Compagnie bosbaPANHâ?�) was formed in September 2005. The
band's first album "Phnom Penh" followed in 2006 and featured songs from
Cambodia, Laos and Thailand, as well as an international repertoire.
Above all, bosbaPANH and her musicians aim to promote the music and
culture of Cambodia to the world.
THU, 24/01, 6 PM VERNISSAGE/OPENING
The Art of Survival
The KR Tribunal has rekindled public interest in the darkest chapter in
Cambodian history. Over 20 artists reflect on the genocide: Chhim
Sothy, Hen Sophal, Vandy Rattana, Prum Vichet, Denis Min Kim, Tith Kanitha,
Tith Veasna, Chhouen Rithy, Chan Nawath, Sou Mey, Khchao Tout,
Sokuntevy Oeur, Yam Sokly amm. This exhibition marks also the start of our
â?oMemory Projectâ?� â?" together with the German artists Horst Hoheisel
and Sebastian Brand.
FRI, 25/01, 7 PM PP DOCFEST
â?oAfter the Conflictâ?� - Short Films from Sierra Leone and Sri Lanka
ScriptNet is an NGO that provides training in film and television with
the emphasis on storytelling and creativity over agendas and issues.
ScriptNet ran two REEL PEACE projects in Sierra Leone and Sri Lanka -
using the filmmaking process and the films that were produced to
contribute to the post-conflict need for cultural and social reconciliation.
Presented by Ian Masters (Scriptnet), with Q&A after screening.
SAT, 26/01, 7 PM FOCUS CAMBODIA
â?oThe Flute Playerâ?� by Jocelyn Glazer
Brilliant Doc Film by Jocelyn Glazer about the life of Cambodian
genocide survivor Arn Chorn-Pond, who was a boy when the Khmer Rouge took
power in 1975. For four long years, Arn followed the strict orders of the
KR â?" doing whatever it took to save his own life amidst torture,
murder, starvation and brainwashing. Today at the age of 38, Arn is
striving to heal the deep scars of Pol Pot's genocide by bringing Cambodia's
once outlawed traditional music back to his people. Arn Chorn Pond will
be present at the screening.
SUN, 27/01, 7 PM SET IN ASIA
â?oThe Kiling Fieldsâ?� by Roland Joffe (USA)
Three Academy Awards for Joffeâ?Ts emotional feature: Sydney Schanberg
is a New York Times journalist covering the Cambodian civil war -
together with his Khmer colleague Dith Pran. When the US forces leave, Pran
sends his family with them, but stays behind himself to help Schanberg.
This is the story of war and friendship, the anguish of a country and
of one man's will to live â?" presented by Florianne Wild, Ph.D.
