From Linda Saphan:

  EXHIBITIONS:

Opening on January 16th : THEO VALLIER at Gasolina.

Théo is doing a solo exhibition of his works. This young artist is using metal sheet as a canvas and play with the rust to paint buildings of Phnom Penh. Very graphic indeed!

(until Jan 20) MY PLACE OF SILENCE

Swiss photographer Beat Presser became famous due to his close cooperation with German actor Klaus Kinski and movie director Werner Herzog ("Fitzcarraldo"). His exhibition "Oasis of Silence" is currently on display in the National Museum Phnom Penh. At Meta House Presser is exhibiting the results of his workshop "My place of Silence" with Cambodian and foreign photographers. To Presser " Phnom Penh seems to be one of the noisiest and busiest cities in South East Asia". He asked the workshop participants to search for silent places in Phnom Penh . Where do they find their retreat? See the works of Vandy Rattana, Heng Ravuth, Chean Long, Virginie Noel, Andrew Jamieson, Marija de Wijn amm.

PP DOCFEST

"Inside Deep Throat" by Bailey/Barbato ( USA)

In 1972, "Deep Throat" was made in a Florida hotel for 25000 dollars and became the most profitable film in motion picture history with a profit of over 600 million dollars. This great doc (made in 2005) covers the story of the film's stunning success and its hysterical opposition along with its dark side of mob influence. In short, the combined events would redefine the popular appeal of pornography… (Narration by Dennis Hopper!)

SAT, 05/01, 7 PM

FOCUS CAMBODIA

"Paper cannot wrap up embers" by Rithy Panh ( Cambodia)

Panh's works all have the same aim, which is to make films that 'restore a humanity that's been erased'. His newest doc relates the daily lives of prostitutes in Phnom Penh - teenage girls from the countryside, who are often sold by their own families, reduced to slavery for half a dollar a day, some of them infected with AIDS. He gives a voice, a name and a story to the more than 30 000 Cambodian women affected by this hidden tragedy.

SUN, 06/01, 7 PM

SET IN ASIA

"Mysterious Object at Noon" by A. Werasethakul (Thailand)

Inspiration for this film was the Surrealist storytelling technique known as "Exquisite Corpse", wherein a variety of writers would contribute to a story one sentence at a time, without knowing what the previous sentences were.   Apichatpong Weerasethakul used the technique to interview disenfranchised people in rural and urban Thailand about their lives, with each person contributing to the ongoing story… (Thai, English subtitles.  2003, 85 min) – presented by Florianne Wild, Ph.D.

CONTEMPORARY DANCE

Don't miss the KHMER ARTS ENSEMBLE's presentation of Sophiline Cheam Shapiro's breathtaking classical dance SEASONS OF MIGRATION on 1 February at 6:30 PM as part of the French Cultural Center's Les Nuits d'Angkor Festival at Angkor Wat in Siem Reap.

What the press has written about Seasons of Migration:

"Shapiro's journey unfolds like a moving painting." new york times

"Shapiro tells her stories enigmatically through groupings that resemble temple friezes and hesitations in the tranquil, hypnotic flow of steps that seem suspended in time."

village voice

"…akin to watching moonlight play across water." los angeles times

The 1 February program pairs SEASONS OF MIGRATION with Carolyn Carlson's contemporary dance DOWN BY THE RIVER.

Tickets are USD $25 and are available at the French Cultural Center and at various outlets throughout the city.
