3 Years Later: A Celebration of Success

Cambodia Education Project

Student team leaders Sok Ieng and Lena proudly display their art work in our newly remodeled computer lab.

Dear Friends,

So much has happened, and I am relieved to finally be taking the opportunity to share some of the great progress we have been making. Once again, I apologize for not communicating more regularly. On
several levels, my e-newsletters make the events real for me, since they connect me to my community(s) outside of my life in Cambodia, and are a great opportunity for me to reflect on a life that all too often moves too fast.

(be sure to click the links in the underlined words to read the full stories on my blog)
Since I last wrote we had a few milestones; Aziza School had it’s 3 year birthday on May 1, Lakeside School turned 1 on June 1, and June 24th was the 4 month mark since the eviction of many of our students families from the Dey Krahorm slum.

Two noteworthy accomplishments that I am proud of are (#1) the community involvement that we see with our student team leaders, who are the primary force behind the operations of the schools. These students are amazing, and as they volunteer they get work experience and extra opportunities to learn.

The other accomplishment (#2) is our medical clinics and dental services, which we offer weekly, not only for our students but for the whole community. We treat and educate a lot of sick people, ease their suffering, and prevent disease from spreading or their problems from getting worse, which is the root of much poverty.

The medical training we have been offering to our older students and staff, as well as other NGOs, is designed to have them be a front line resource for their community (aka barefoot doctors), complete with certificates, taught graciously by Dr. Annie Chen-Green from New Zealand.

These results are on top of our regular classes of English, computers, and leadership we provide to over 200 students at our 2 schools.
Our focus is not only on skills that we know will bring job opportunities, but also on life skills and holistic education. We have many great partners and volunteers who bring our students art, photography, soccer, dance and yoga. One great partner is Kundalini Yoga Cambodia, who has trained 2 of our students to be yoga teachers. Read about this great program and our opportunity to support our student, Sela, to become a certified teacher of kids yoga.
The Eviction: Village Earth previously sent my letter of some of the events and trauma we were experiencing after the eviction, and I have now posted a student’s letter regarding her experience of the eviction; see the Student Letter. Reflecting back, little good came of this for the people we work with, but there are many instances of human triumph, and I am convinced that nowhere is the human spirit stronger and more resilient than in the slums of Phnom Penh.
Our photography teacher Maria posted some moving pictures and comments on her blog (a true work of art).

In the aftermath of the eviction, many of us fought hard to serve those who were too traumatized to take care of themselves and their families. Our student team leaders had an excellent opportunity to demonstrate their leadership skills, and worked very hard to help their community. While we only helped a small portion of the people that were evicted, Aziza School was an emergency response center, and it was a time where I worked harder and with more focus than I ever have. Many, many thanks to the people who have donated so we could help people in crisis.

My friend Nader, who passed away in March, was a big help during this difficult time, and will be missed!
An unfortunate reality is that you rely on me to paint the picture of what our students are like, and I truly cannot find the words to express what beauty and greatness they possess. I wish I could just open my mind and you could see what I see. We hope that you will “invest” in them, and their potential.

Our little organization isn’t as small as it once was, and we produce results more than ever. To do what we do requires the compassion and commitment of you, and we hope that you can give, find others to give, hold a fundraiser, or do what you can. We need people to invest in the futures of young people with great potential. Let me know how I can assist you.

Thank you,

Drew & the Aziza Team

"I Ain't Leavin' "

For the better part of a year, a diverse crew of six young filmmakers
spent their afternoons and weekends making a documentary film about
Cambodians growing up in the impoverished Oak Park Apartments in the San
Antonio District of East Oakland, home to many recent immigrants. The
20-minute film, I Ain't Leavin', describes the youth's struggle for
balance and security in a neighborhood where residents cope with gangs on
one hand and neighborhood gentrification on the other.

Human Sciences Happy Hours In PP

Happy Hours !!!

On thursday 17th June , 6PM
.

Lucie Labbé

Performing Tradition and Folklore: Dance as a Cultural Practice to Build Cambodian Identity (Preliminary Findings).

Venue: BAITONG RESTAURANT, 7 st 360, near Beung Keng Kang. (www.baitongcambodia.org).

In 2008 Lucie Labbé obtained a Master in Anthropology from Descartes Unversity, Paris, France, through a dissertation focusing on Cambodian dances. She then decided to pursue her research on performing arts and their interaction with the cambodian identity in her upcoming PhD research.

While she was observing how families of refugees in France experienced Cambodian dance, she started to wonder about the place of dance in nowadays Cambodian culture. The research led to deal both with classical and "folk" dance teaching in very contrasting contexts (such as the Royal University of Fine Arts and local NGO schools in Cambodia), while a gaze at some experiences of Cambodian communities in foreign countries proved to be relevant for the comparison.

In this very presentation Lucie will use the results from her former master dissertation to share her preliminary findings and conclusions, as well as the questions and the doubts arising from those first investigations. This will found the base of the next field work she intends to carry on.

New stories this month...

Kickboxing in Long Beach, California by Stephane Janin

Long Beach Khmer Kickboxing Center was created in 1986 by Oumry Ban, a former Cambodian kickboxing champion. Ban won his first national title in 1964 at 61 kilograms (or 135 pounds). His career shows 309 fights with 278 wins (31 losses only), 200 of them were KO!
In 1970, Ban joined the governmental army where he first started as a soldier, being part of brutal and bloody battles. Eventually, the army realized what a celebrity he was and sent him back to Phnom Penh to continue fighting. In April 1975, the Khmer Rouge took control of the whole country, Ban went to work in the rice fields like all his Cambodian fellows…
Oumry Ban arrived in the United States in 1981 as a refugee. He originally lived in Chicago and moved to Long Beach in 1986, the year he opened the Khmer Kickboxing center with the help of established Cambodian people who knew who he was. Since, Ban, the father of 5 children, has run this modest studio for 20 years and struggled to make ends meet. Several times he was offered to sell the business, but Ban can't resign to it. Kickboxing is his life and too much about Cambodian culture to be stopped like that. In the club, some consider him a living legend, for what he has been through and the fighter that he was.
I got to visit that club after I met with Phiream Sok, 20, and his girlfriend Jeanne Thoek, 17, at the United Cambodian Community of Long Beach. The two come to the kickboxing center every evening from 7 to 9pm to keep in shape, remain healthy, and get rid of the stress of the day. Most of all, they like the spirit of respect and self-confidence (among other things) that one can find in the practice of Kickboxing. Phiream was born in Cambodia in 1989. He had to flee Cambodia with his mother and other siblings in July 1997 after his father - a Funcinpec colonel and Secretary of State at the Ministry of Interior - was killed in what human rights groups alleged was an execution.
On Phiream's back, a tattoo: RIP: "Rest in Peace"…

Khmer Islam (moments of joy and some praying time) by Eric de Vries

The Khmer Islam, known as the Cham Muslims is an ethnic group that lives in villages near the Mekong and Tonle Sap river in Cambodia. Most Chams of around 450.000 in Cambodia provide themselves with fishing and agriculture. Like Islam countries around the world they also pray five times a day in arabic in their local mosques...

It was a pleasure to go into their domain and see the friendly and happy faces all around. Even in the village mosques, the elderly were fully cooperate and allow me to take the photoshoots from any angle I wanted. Also the women, wearing burka's, gave me a smile while taking their pictures for the series...

The Khmer Islam-series were shot in the Islam Spiritual Center, Russei Chrouy village, Masjid-Alrahmani mosque all north of Phnom Penh, in the Masjid Thom Dubai mosque on the borders of Boeung Kak lake and in the Nurunnaim Mosque and Chrang Chamreh village on National Road 5...

LUCTURE IN KHMER

"ENTERING THE SHADE" :
A FEMALE NUBILITY OR PRE-MARRIAGE RITE

by Sun Chandeb

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 6:00pm

In Khmer culture like in many others, of each important stage of the lige cycle, specific religous ceremonies such as birth, cutting the top-knot, ordination, Chol Mlop, marrige and funeral ceremonies are performed. These ceremonies are khnow among researchers as "rites of passage".

The lecture will be focusing on one of the coremonies, known as Chol Mlop. The Chol Mlop literally means "entering the shade" which is a ceremony for a girl who reaches her puberly. After the period of her seclusiion in the "shade", the girl is socially accepted as a nubile young woman. Notably, the ceremony is thus far taken for granted that it is no longer practiced in Cambodia. Therefore, this presenation is also intended to depict the current ritual practices in some parts of Cambodia, which are on the edge of disappearance.

It’s ‘ComicKaze’ weekend @ Café Living Room!

Every Queen’s Birthday Weekend (6th - 8th of June), Australia’s brave cartoonists undertake ‘ComicKaze’ – an endeavor to draw 24 pages in 24 hours. http://www.ozcomics24.com

This Saturday, Cambodian comic artists will be lending creative support to their Aussie friends via a live web link from 8am to 8pm. Sunday morning will see new artwork posted from this Cambodian - Australian collaboration!

Art supplies and local technical support will be provided by Our Books, Cambodia’s comic art nonprofit, and web linkage will be hosted by ComicsLifestyle.com with the help of Café Living Room.

The 24 Hour Comic is a ‘free drawing’ session designed to unlock creativity. Our Books has been developing Project:24 to gradually introduce Cambodian artists to this unique exercise and the global comics community.
http://www.scottmccloud.com/4-inventions/24hr/index.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24-hour_comic

Artists are welcome to attempt the full 24 hours. Since this is a big task, we are offering a ‘Cambodian Variation’: a one page in one hour ‘Introduce Yourself’ comic, so Australian and Cambodian artists can get to know each other.

We will have a scanner on hand for sharing comics and jam strips. Final efforts will be displayed at Café Living Room this coming month, and compiled into a small publication for Australia’s National Young Writer’s Festival.

Come by and see artists in action! Lend your enthusiasm to comic artists going the distance! Come by, log in and see them live, or check out the final art as we post it up on Sunday!

Event Time: 8am – 8pm Saturday June 6 2009.

THE WRESTLER & ENVIRONMENT FILM FEST @ META

Dear Meta House friends,
are you ready to rumble?

Darren Aronofsky has been one of the few American directors whose movies
upset the complacency of indie cinema. We screen his newest film "THE
WRESTLER" this TUESDAY, 02/06, 7 PM @ Meta House. The compelling drama stars
Mickey Rourke as washed-up '80s wrestler Randy Robinson. US Today: "Rourke
gives the performance of his life."

On WEDNESDAY, 03/06, 7 PM, we start a five-days-film-festival as part of
"The Environment Week") with the award-winning documentary "UP THE YANGTZE"
in coop. with the Heinrich-Boell-Foundation.

Detailed information below.
Best regards, your MH-team
