GLOBAL HYBRID @ Meta House - this week!

THUR, 02/07, 6 PM we celebrate the EXHIBITION OPENING of "GLOBAL HYBRID".
Cambodian
contemporary artists Ouer Sokuntevy, Chhan Nawath, Riem Em, Leang Seckon,
Pich
Sopheap, Kong Vollak, Meas Sokorn meet counterparts from the diaspora (Tom
Tor,
Sayon Syprasoeuth, Ratha Hanh) as well as US based artists Stephane Janin
(France)
and Denise Scott. They explore, from their own point of view, how to
define their
GLOBAL HYBRID position beyond two cultures in this group show. The
exhibition is
curated by Denise Scott and Lydia Parusol.

KEEP SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH: DEATH, REBIRTH & RETURN
Screened only at Meta House: KAMPUCHEA: DEATH & REBIRTH (1979, 90 min) is
the first
doc film after the Khmer Rouge. OUT OF THE POISON TREE (2007, 56 min) by Beth
Pielert follows the return of an American survivor of the genocide. The
doc film
features the music of Khmer-American rapper praCh.

CAMBODIAN DREAMS: LEAVING THE CAMPS FOR A BETTER FUTURE
THE CHILDEN OF KROUSAR THMEY by Marcus d'Arcy follows 32 orphans in
refugee camp
Site 2 and their return to Cambodia. (54 min, 1993). Stanley Harper's
CAMBODIAN
DREAMS (2007, 85 min) chronicles parallel lives of a Khmer family – half
of whom
went to Thailand, while the other half stayed in their home village in
Cambodia. The
filmmaker will be present at the screening and hold a Q&A.

FROM THE UNITED STATES TO CAMBODIA: TWO WORLDS OF WAR
Sheldon Renan's KILLING OF AMERICA (1983, 90 min) is a stunning eye-witness
experience of the growth of violence in the US. STRAIGHT REFUGEEZ (2005,
75 min) by
Ian White pictures so-called "returnees" – former American convicts and
their new
lives in Phnom Penh.
