Master Musician from Cambodia hits Melbourne

Monday 3rd Mar

Northcote Social Club

with Ouch Savy

Benefit show for Cambodian Living Arts

Kong Nay hits the Australian shores as part of 'Womad' festival and in support of Cambodian Living Arts!

Respectfully dubbed "The Ray Charles of Cambodia," Master Kong Nay is a charismatic blind musician whose trademark dark glasses and pock marked smile are known all over Cambodia. Nay is renowned in Cambodia as one of the great artists to survive the genocide of Pol Pot. Kong Nay is a master of the Chapei, a traditional form of improvised song-making that is often compared to American Delta Blues. Accompanied by his own spirited strumming on the chapei dang weng (a Cambodian long-necked lute), Kong Nay uses his lively voice and tenacious word play to cleverly improvise poetry and song. Kong Nay routinely gets his audience dancing in the aisles. Ouch Savy is Kong Nay's protégé and is part of the new generation of Chapei musicians who are at the beginning of an emerging musical awareness that could come to rival imported karaoke and pop!

The title of the work  "Silence Remained" implies that after the destruction all that remained was silence. (www.silence-remained.com). Zebra Poetry Film Festival

A fusion of poetry and film – the ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival is once again

calling for entries

Submissions are now being accepted for the fourth ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival

Previous press comments on the ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival have praised the diversity of the films

and the high level of entertainment they offer. Against the background of these positive reviews,

the Literaturwerkstatt Berlin and interfilm Berlin are once again calling for entries for the ZEBRA

Poetry Film Festival, an biannual competition that recognises the best in poetry filmmaking, now in

its eighth year.

Short films based on poems can be submitted. A programme commission will decide which entries

will be shown during the fourth ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival, taking place in Berlin from 9 to 12

October 2008, an international jury deciding the winner. Prizes worth a total of EUR 10,000 will be

awarded. The deadline for entries is 16 June 2008 (full entry conditions at

www.literaturwerkstatt.org).

The ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival has established itself as an international forum for short films that

deal with the content, aesthetics or form of poems. It gives filmmakers from around the world the

opportunity to exchange ideas and develop new contacts.

The ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival is a cooperation project between the Literaturwerkstatt Berlin and interfilm Berlin and is

kindly supported by the Capital Cultural Fund and the Goethe-Institut. It takes place as part of the poesiefestival berlin.

Choir Singers Needed

Calling All Choir Singers!

There is a choir called "Bella Voce" that meets every Tuesday at the ISSP  at 6pm for 1.5 hours. The choir sings a variety of songs contemporary and classical and has two performances during the year, one in May and the other in December (with practice hiatus over both summer (Northern and Southern) periods). The choir is made up of a variety of nationalities and is very casual and doesn't demand a musical background or experience - just enthusiasm for singing.

The choir is currently a few sessions into its first practice for the year but it is in great need of new blood - especially male singers!

So if you are interested or know of anyone that would be interested, please drop us an email.

Tim Says: Deuces Wild

Happy International Pancake Day!

Hope you ate a few delicious, fluffy cakes of the panned variety today in this attempt by Big Pancake (with the close collaboration of Big Maple Syrup) to promote the industry.  If you happen to be in Chicago in the near future, go see Dorothy at The Ohio House on Ohio and Wells St..  The days of this shady, hourly motel from the 50's surrounded by skyscrapers and Excalibur are clearly numbered, but its Deuces Wild with two pancakes, two strips of bacon, four eggs, and two cups of coffee for $2.25 is delightful.  Beware of Dorothy though, as she's been known to coax customers back into the hotel for a little extra cookin.

Urban Nomad 2008

URBAN NOMAD 2008: SEND US YOUR FILMS
NT$10,000 in prizes for best short films, including Kuso!

The Urban Nomad Film Fest is now accepting entries for its 2008 festival, to take place in Taipei in late April and early May. We will give NT$10,000 in prizes for the best short local films, including a new category, Kuso films. The entry deadline is March 25.

Send us: experimental film/ video, animation, comedic shorts, political documentary, music documentary, skateboard/ surfing, gender, migrant workers, Internet shorts.

This year we will put together a special section for Kuso, and Kuso shorts will be eligible for prizes.

Please note: Films under 15 minutes stand a greater chance of getting accepted. Priority will be given to films with both Chinese and English: in other words, Chinese language films should English subtitles, and all other films should have Chinese subtitles.

If your film is accepted, you will be invited to an opening party, toasted royally, and if you can speak at the screening of your film, that would be awesome!

This will be the 7th Urban Nomad. We are an annual underground film festival, established in Taipei in 2002. Our goals are to support the local film community and establish links between indie film scenes in Taiwan and nearby countries. After Taipei, Urban Nomad's 2007 festival traveled to Hsinchu and internationally to Basel, Switzerland, Miami and Hong Kong. We showed films from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and other countries, and we work with local filmmakers everywhere we go. Through our screenings, we want to put an end to the impersonal 'black box' movie theater environment where hundreds of people can watch films without really noticing each other as human beings. Film is not just about entertainment, it is about communication.

ENTRY DEADLINE: March 25
FORMAT: DVD or MPEG2 (NTSC)
ADDRESS: 5F, #16 Jinmen St., Taipei, Taiwan
