An Eternal Harvest

Slide show soon at Popil PhotoGallery

Hey there!
Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 6.30pm, please join for the screening of a
photo project by Jerry Redfern and Karen Coates at Popil PhotoGallery and
talk with the artists.
Coates and Redfern's "Eternal Harvest" documentes the subject of UXO in
Laos, where 4 billion pounds of bombs have been dumped by US military
between 1964 and 1973. If it seems an old story for you, that is a very
serious reason to come see at gallery and realise that today up to 30
percent of those bombs did not detonate, remaining in the soil, covering
more than 35,000 square miles of the country, making every week Laotians die
while plowing their fields, playing in their yards, tending their cattle.

"An Eternal Harvest", a photo project about UXO in Laos by Jerry Redfern and
Karen Coates, at Popil PhotoGallery, 126 street 19, Phnom Penh, February
16th, 17th and 18th at 6.30pm.

I hope to see you,

Stephane Janin

Where Elephants Weep

Dear Friends,

Please help us spread out words about "Where Elephants Weep", an East Meets West in a New Contemporary Cambodian Opera that is coming to Lowell in April 2007. Only three performances on April 27, 28 & 29, 2007.

The story focuses on a refugee from the Khmer Rouge genocide, Sam, who returns to his homeland from America. Committed to finding his roots in his native culture, he unexpectedly falls in love with Bopha, a pop-karaoke star.

The struggle between the traditional and modernity, East and West, is played out through a musical score drawing on classical western, ancient Cambodian, and popular American music traditions - against the backdrop of a beautiful land torn by war and gemocide.

"Where Elephants Weep" - a love story from a land where civil strife nearly extinguished a great ancient culture.

Check out the website at www.WhereElephantsWeep.net. Also, check out out postcard attached.

Regards,

Samkhann Khoeun
Co-Director,

This event will be a splendid celebration of Khmer talent, with a triple
focus on traditional instruments, singing in various styles, and piano.

Traditional Mahaori and Pen Peat orchestras will begin the two halves of the
program.  As well, the wonderful large-guitar CHAPEY will be played by Gong
Boran, a son of revered Chapey master Gong Nai.  Boran's vigorous,
compelling style shows that Chapey is a truly living art.  Khmer
instrumental master Yun Khean Theara will perform on two Cambodian-invented
instruments, the Tro Khmer and Ksae Diw.

Four singers will present two songs each, embracing a rich array of foreign
and Cambodian styles: Khmer composers Sin Sisamuth and King Father Sihanouk,
the Carpenters, Italian opera, jazz, and French.  The singers are Mrs. Kim
Neang, Mr. Hy Kimchanthavouth, Mr. Khut Chan Pheap and Mr. Pol Vann Chaom
Mony.  As well, a group of University voice students will perform King
Sihanouk's song "Chumno Wicheka".

To round out the program, Mrs. Tep Khuntheareth and Mr. Khim Daravatanak
will perform a piano duet version of the popular American song, "From a
Distance."

Funds raised at the event will further the project to create or repair one
hundred traditional instruments - with well over fifty funded so far, thanks
to Cambodian and foreign supporters and a three-way partnership between the
University and School of Fine Arts (Music Departments), the Cambodia Support
Group, and the Canadian Embassy.
