WELCOME TO THE VIDEO JUNGLE: INDIGENOUS MEDIA IN CAMBODIA
In an increasingly globalized world, maintaining an indigenous identity in
the media is a challenge. How can communities promote indigenous voices and
forms of knowledge? What do you think functioning indigenous media should
look like, and how best can this be achieved? Two new documentaries, THE
LIZARD'S TAIL and THE TRECH'S NEST by Inazio Zurutuza feature short stories
from ethnic minority groups in Cambodia. The Spanish filmmaker shows
perceptions of disaster risk and threats to traditional livelihoods, driven
by natural and man-made hazards. The filmmaker will be present for a Q&A,
followed by community media productions from Mondulkiri and Rattanakiri.

SAT, 27/03, 7 PM
DMC NIGHT: THE QUOTIDIAN OF YOUNG KHMER FILMMAKERS
In its monthly presentation of student films, the Department of Media and
Communication (DMC) at the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) will focus
on everyday life in Cambodia. The short documentaries - that were made
during classes and workshops at the only journalism workshop in the
country - show what is behind things that you might observe daily without
paying much attention to them. Followed by a Q&A with some of the student
directors. Meta House shows a selection of the best films by DMC students
every last Saturday of the month. DVDs of select student productions will be
on sale tonight (Khmer with English subtitles).

DANCE NIGHT: REBUILDING LIVES & ART IN POST-WAR CAMBODIA
An intimate portrait of the teacher-student relationship in Khmer classical
dance, THE TENTH DANCER, directed by Sally Ingleton (1992, 55mins) is a film
about loss and retrieval, and disruption and continuity. Em Theay, renowned
former palace singer and dancer and her dance student Pen Sok Chea are both
survivors of the Khmer Rouge. This Australian documentary traces their
journey as they try to rebuild their lives and their art in Cambodia
following the genocide that left perhaps more than 80 percent of their
artistic colleagues dead. This presentation is part of our dance film series
curated by Khmer Arts Academy, based in Takhmao.

Leang Seckon: this Wednesday at Cafe Living Room

Please, come to join Seckon this Wednesday at cafe Living Room, 7pm

Leang Seckon invites you to an evening with him at Cafe Living Room before he leaves for his solo exhibition, 'Heavy Skirt', at Rossi and Rossi Gallery in London. The exhibition features ten large paintings, ten collages and an installation (all of which are now in London).

Seckon's new work is about Cambodia in the seventies.  His memories and stories of that time, are woven with fabric, paint, thread, and papers from travels around and from here, to tell a story which is at once intensely personal, and the story of all of us. It is both a local and a global story. We all know something of them, but nobody knows these stories like he does, of his life and experiences growing up. Lately he talks of vomiting something out of him to his work. Something poisonous is coming up, needs to be retched and out of him. Until then he is hurting, but when it is out he finds he has vomited a flower.

So, please, come to share the love with him as he prepares for the first solo show in Europe. He would love to see you, and he has prepared a surprise which you do not want to miss.

Representations of Mobility and Prostitution

An Ethnographic Case Study of Vietnamese Sex Workers Migrating to Cambodia

This ethnographic paper addresses the issue of women cross-border mobility for the aim of prostitution between Southern Vietnam (An Giang province) and Cambodia. The goal is to update existing research carried out in Cambodia in the late 1990s by Western researchers commissioned by aid organizations (Derks 1998, Baker 2003), and to bring a Vietnamese perspective into the picture. Existing research explains mobility from Vietnam in terms of the easy money female migrant prostitutes could earn in Cambodia. According to our findings, the situation has changed and this paper explores why. Although illegal migration for prostitution from Vietnam to Phnom Penh remains an easy alternative, it appears less attractive than in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

First, the paper discusses methodological issues. Several significant barriers were encountered when conducting field research – complex administrative procedures to obtain research permits, police surveillance, informant’s fear and distrust – which may call into question the validity of the data, and thus need to be discussed in detail. Second, the paper examines the situation on the ground in the late 1990s: cross-border mobility and routes in the Mekong delta, and Vietnamese prostitution in Phnom Penh. Third, the paper explores the reasons underlying the obvious change of perception by potential unskilled migrants who no longer perceive Cambodia as some sort El Dorado and therefore an appealing destination. Different reasons help explain this change, such as increased awareness of risks of deception and exploitation thanks to massive campaigns against so-called “social evils” and against “human trafficking.” Another factor is the increased availability of more attractive professional options, such as internal migration for prostitution to provinces from the Mekong delta, to Ho Chi Minh City and its suburban provinces undergoing rapid industrialization and economic growth (Binh Duong for instance), or to Asian countries like Taiwan, South Korea, or Singapore. This paper demonstrates that contemporary mobility is no longer a clandestine phenomenon originating from remote, rural and porous borderlands. Instead, it tends to be transnational and framed by international legal standards and discussions. The paradigm of human trafficking from the late 1990s and 2000s which presented the image of an innocent peasant girl who becomes a “victim” lured by a trafficker at the border, is now outdated, and no longer corresponds to realities on the ground.

This paper is based on 18 months of fieldwork in the Mekong delta. It results from collaboration between the Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the University of An Giang, the NGO Alliance Anti-Trafic (Vietnam), the Observatory of Illicit Traffics in the Mekong (Thailand), and the Institute for Research on Contemporary Southeast Asia (IRASEC, Thailand). A French version of this paper will be published in spring 2010.

Nicolas Lainez is a PhD student in social anthropology at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. He studies women cross-border mobility from Vietnam to Cambodia and Singapour, social construction of human trafficking, informal credit and usury, forms of people' transaction and dependency, gender and social stratification.

Looking forward to see you all there !

Dear Friends of Meta House!

The month of March starts with "SOLA" - the exhibition opening of Vincent Broustet (TUES, 02/03, 6 PM). The French artist was born 1962 in Bordeaux and went to the Paris School of Fine Arts. Broustet - who nowadays lives in Kampot - has always mixed his passion for traveling with his love of drawing and painting. "Every human being carries the baggage of emotions, which are wrapped in nuances of a clandestine emotional world", says Broustet. "These nuances are what I try to capture in my drawings...

Please be our guest or visit us in the following days. From Thursday to Saturday we are hosting MUSIC FILM FESTIVAL with exciting documentaries about Beethoven, Reggae/Dub and Punk Rock. More details below.

All the best,
Nico Mesterharm (director)

WED, 03/03, 7 PM
JOHN PILGER IN SOUTH AMERICA: "THE WAR ON DEMOCRACY"
John Pilger is an award-winning investigative journalist and documentary filmmaker. "THE WAR ON DEMOCRACY" (2006, 96 mins) is set in Latin America and the USA, it explores the historic and current relationship of Washington with countries such as Venezuela. This screening is followed by the award-winning doc "THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED" (2002, 74 mins). Irish filmmakers Bartley/O'Briain focus on Hugo Chavez, president of Venezuela, and the U.S. supported coup that briefly took him from power. Chavez is beloved by his nation's working class and a tough-as-nails, quixotic opponent to the power structure that would see him deposed.

MUSIC ON FILM (from Thursday to Saturday, 7PM)

THU, 04/03, 7 PM
THE GREATEST COMPOSER EVER: "IN SEARCH OF BEETHOVEN"
After the screening of the short doc "CAMBODIA GOES BAROQUE" (2009, 13 mins) filmmaker Phil Grabsky travels across Europe and North America to interview historians and musicians "IN SEARCH OF BEETHOVEN" (2009, 139mins). He captures the raw energy of world-class artists such as Sir Roger Norrington, Riccardo Chailly and Claudio Abbado and addresses the romantic myth that German composer Beethoven was a heroic, tormented figure battling to overcome his tragic fate, struck down by deafness, who searched for his 'immortal beloved' but remained unmarried. "The Observer" writes: "One of the finest movies about a great musician I have ever seen".

FRI, 05/03, 7 PM
LIVE FROM JAMAICA: "ROOTS, ROCK, REGGAE" AND DUB MASTERS
Although strongly influenced by traditional African and Caribbean music, as well as by American rhythm and blues, reggae owes its direct origins to the progressive development of ska and rocksteady in 1960s Jamaica. "ROOTS ROCK REGGAE" (1977, 60mins) was the first in-depth Reggae documentary and looks at the social and political importance of this 'cry of the people'. Bruno Natal's well-researched film "DUB ECHOES" (2007, 75mins) shows how the Jamaican invention called dub ended up influencing much of the music we hear today, from electronic music to hip hop, transforming the studio into a musical instrument and giving way to sonic experiments.

SAT, 06/03, 7 PM
PUNK IS DEAD: SONIC MEMORIES OF THE LEGENDARY "RAMONES"
In the early 1970's, the music industry rang eerily familiar in its method of promoting trends over music. The public was being spoon-fed music that corporations simply intended to make a profit from. The backlash to this came to be known internationally as "Punk Rock". Michael Gramaglia and Jim Fields' brilliant film "END OF THE CENTURY" (2005, 110mins) tells the story of US punk band "Ramones" – a story about friendship, originality, professionalism and success. Scooping last minute interviews with Joey and Dee Dee Ramone before their respective deaths in 2001 and 2002, it's likely to stand as the definitive testament to the band's lasting impact.

SUN, 07/03, 7 PM
DISTURBING AND UNCOMFORTABLE: HANEKE'S "FUNNY GAMES"
Austrian director Michael Haneke is the Todd Solondz of the thriller genre: Without thought, he will bring up the most disturbing and uncomfortable of topics and play them out with a poet's finesse and a keen sense of shock. His controversial feature film "FUNNY GAMES" (1997, 108mins) is a filmic experiment. Two young well-educated men hold a family hostage and torture them with sadistic games. Like the film's two tormentors who enjoy batting about their prey with games of psychological manipulation, Haneke, in turn, seems to take great delight in putting his audience through the wringer, only to turn around and ask what we're all so worked up about.
