FRI, 18/07
THE FIRST UNAFF TRAVELING FILM FESTIVAL PHNOM PENH
DOUBLE Feature
DIGITAL DUMP: EXPORTING RE-USE AND ABUSE TO AFRICA
If you have ever wondered what happens to a computer when you get rid of it,
this is the film for you. It traces the computers from North America and
Europe to West Africa, one of many regions that is on the receiving end of
an escalating global trade in toxic, obsolete discarded computers. If you
are concerned about what could happen to Cambodia, please come and join us.
(23 minutes, by Jim Puckett, precedes On a Tightrope)

SAT, 19/07
FIRST UNAFF TRAVELING FILM FESTIVAL PHNOM PENH
EN ROUTE TO BAGHDAD
This film tells the story of one person's effort to make a difference as
part of the United Nations, and is as much a story about the UN as it is
about the man, Sergio Vieira de Mello. Anyone who was in Cambodia during
UNTAC knows of Sergio, who oversaw the repatriation and later became Kofi
Annan's special envoy to Iraq. This film traces his life, including his time
in Mozambique, Cambodia and East Timor, as a metaphor for the evolving role
of the United Nations. If you contemplate what role the UN should play, and
whether one person can make a difference, this film is worth seeing.
(56 minutes, by Simone Duarte, Ane Soanes and Kristine Candeso)

TRANSFORMATION

…is a cross cultural exhibition of 8 Los Angeles-based artists and 8
Cambodian-based artists. Although the artists may use traditional and
non-traditional materials, processes or aesthetics to set the initial
grounds or framework of the notion of familiarity within his or her
installation, they re-contextualize these elements bringing the unfamiliar
and unpredictable states into an inter-disciplinary fusion alive. By
transcending the physical elements, the artist is able to reveal the hidden
emotional, spiritual, and cultural underlying meanings to define, "What is
the here and now?"

TRANSFORMATION explore these issues, along with an emphasis on portability
of the installation, in which the exhibit will travel to Long Beach, CA for
the Khmer New Year, April 2009 featuring artists, along with filmmakers, and
writers, in a collaborative celebration.

L'Indochine en Images

A/S : présentation du coffret de photos "L'Indochine en Images"
Jeudi 26 juin à 10h à Bibliothèque nationale,
Salle patrimoniale, rue 92 (Christopher Howes), Phnom Penh

Bonjour,

A bientôt,

Khlot Vibolla
Directrice de la Bibliothèque nationale ud Cambodge

The period of "traditional" graffiti art starts in the mid-nineties, but the production never satisfies the artist. At the beginning of the year 2000, starts the period of urban communication, in the direction of the first steps of the international street-art movement, becoming a pioneer for Italy. The local-dimension production spreads also abroad and the artist finds a seat on the street art young star-system. The next steps take him to inusual and provokingly productions, changing the aestethic of conventional graffiti: not anymore a logo or an inscription serially repeated, but interventions contextualized with the location.Minelli starts to join his performances with canvas-painting and painting on materials collected during his frequent voyages. His artworks continue to have the instinct and the naturalness of his urban inscriptions. The surfaces perfume of a conceptual poetry, sometimes with an abstract and childish mark, sometimes sckratching and with a strong impact. The sperimantations, ironic and introspective at the same time, have as common denominator a strong and immediate. Traces of his production can be found from the north-italian countryside to the big european cities, arriving in the middle of the Himalaya-region in buddhist atmospheres on the memorable Kathmandu, in Nepal. His research obliaged him on thinking about the city, and the relation between the new ecosystem and people. At now, his productions are published by the most known art and design vanguard-magazines. After receiving the maximum vote degree from the Brera Fine-Art Academy in Milan, mmunication which continue to hold herself with the illegal impulse, reclaimed shamelessly, without hidding himself behind a pseudonym."

ArteIn, anno xx n°108

"The beginning of Minelli's production is almoust spontaneous, he is the Steinbech boy who wants to leave a trace of his existence. Not only words, sentences, searched and wanted non-senses, but also drawings, nearly tales. His mark, his word, become an abstract shape. His supports are wooden boards, packing boards, well joined, where the expressionist marks are placed, as knife-cuts. An eye (never lost) at Jean-Michel-Basquiat's world: skulls, crowns, traces of an inner reality, without the African taste, but with an inexpressed primordial energy. Filippo Minelli writes on his business-card "The idiot son you would like to have". "

Mauro corradini, Bresciaoggi, 7 June 2007

"The young "writer" leaved traces of his presence all around the world, with a style ironic and introspective at the same time, always with a strong impact. And his poetically-conceptual paintings have the same communication-power of his urban sperimentations."

"The Immigrant"

"The Immigrant" a powerful new exhibition by artist MAO SOVIET

OPENING TONIGHT -THURSDAY 3RD JULY 6PM -AT JAVA CAFE & GALLERY.....

 SEE YOU THERE.....

"The issue of unemployment has made many daughters living in poor
families throughout Cambodia leave their beloved homes to go to the
city in order to find work. Moreover, many of them are forced to
immigrate into other countries including North Korea, Malaysia, and
Thailand, where they are faced with harsh labor conditions.

I want my paintings to interpret this cultural landscape and the
issues faced by women in our society, in order to show and inform
people that we must resolve this matter together and not let their
plight pass us by. "

Mao Soviet

Mao soviet was born in 1982 in Battambang Province. He studied
general art from 1996 to 2000 and then modern art from 2000 to 2004
at Phare Pounleu Selpak Organization in Battambang. Soviet has shown
his work at the Center Cultural France in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and
and Battambang , he has also exhibited at the Alliance Caf in Siem
