FRI, 18/07
THE FIRST UNAFF TRAVELING FILM FESTIVAL PHNOM PENH
DOUBLE Feature
DIGITAL DUMP: EXPORTING RE-USE AND ABUSE TO AFRICA
If you have ever wondered what happens to a computer when you get rid of it,
this is the film for you. It traces the computers from North America and
Europe to West Africa, one of many regions that is on the receiving end of
an escalating global trade in toxic, obsolete discarded computers. If you
are concerned about what could happen to Cambodia, please come and join us.
(23 minutes, by Jim Puckett, precedes On a Tightrope)

SAT, 19/07
FIRST UNAFF TRAVELING FILM FESTIVAL PHNOM PENH
EN ROUTE TO BAGHDAD
This film tells the story of one person's effort to make a difference as
part of the United Nations, and is as much a story about the UN as it is
about the man, Sergio Vieira de Mello. Anyone who was in Cambodia during
UNTAC knows of Sergio, who oversaw the repatriation and later became Kofi
Annan's special envoy to Iraq. This film traces his life, including his time
in Mozambique, Cambodia and East Timor, as a metaphor for the evolving role
of the United Nations. If you contemplate what role the UN should play, and
whether one person can make a difference, this film is worth seeing.
(56 minutes, by Simone Duarte, Ane Soanes and Kristine Candeso)

TRANSFORMATION

…is a cross cultural exhibition of 8 Los Angeles-based artists and 8
Cambodian-based artists. Although the artists may use traditional and
non-traditional materials, processes or aesthetics to set the initial
grounds or framework of the notion of familiarity within his or her
installation, they re-contextualize these elements bringing the unfamiliar
and unpredictable states into an inter-disciplinary fusion alive. By
transcending the physical elements, the artist is able to reveal the hidden
emotional, spiritual, and cultural underlying meanings to define, "What is
the here and now?"

TRANSFORMATION explore these issues, along with an emphasis on portability
of the installation, in which the exhibit will travel to Long Beach, CA for
the Khmer New Year, April 2009 featuring artists, along with filmmakers, and
writers, in a collaborative celebration.
