MORE INFOS ABOUT OUR JULY FILMS…..

Fri., 13th of July, 7PM: ISAN GHOSTS
Brimming with colour and music "Ghosts of Isan" (director: Robert Millis/USA) documents a unique festival held in a small town in Thailand's Isan province. The film puts the viewer in the middle of the festivities, creating an immersive "you are there" experience featuring masgnificent masks, ornate costumes, phallic charms, ceremony, drinking, dancing and endless addictive Molam music… EXTRA: Video "ISAN Pop Music" (Sublime Frequencies/USA)

Sat., 14th of July, 7PM: BUILDING A DREAM
In February 1999 the German architect Michael Weiss came to Cambodia - fascinated by the ruins of Angkor but moved by the numerous child beggars. Weiss purchased 2.5 ha of land in Phnom Penh. There he is building a children's village, which has been designed by vulnerable children. "Building a Dream" (director: Nico Mesterharm/Germany) is a long-term documentary that follows this unique aid program from its beginning…

Fri., 20th of July, 7PM: THE FLUTE PLAYER
If the Khmer Rouge had not taken over Cambodian in 1975, Arn Chorn-Pond probably would have carried on his family's legacy and become an opera star. Instead, at the age of nine Arn was thrust into the darkness of Cambodia's ghastly Killing Fields. Now, after living in the U.S. for 20 years, Arn faces the dark shadows of his war-torn past as he fights to save Cambodia's once outlawed traditional music from extinction. (Director: Jocelyn Glatzer/USA)

Plus: THE BATTLE TO REBUILD SBAEK THOM – short documentary by Chuon Sarin about two groups of puppeteers that were very famous puppet troupes in Siem Reap before the Khmer Rouge era.  Today, these two troupes continue to rebuild itself after the Khmer Rouge, but they struggle to maintain this art form.

Sat., 21st of July, 7PM: EVERYSOMEWHEREEVER
(The unstill life of Stephen Eastaugh)
Steven Eastaugh (Australia): "During the past two decades I have somehow managed to travel to over 70 countries on all continents. Many places were short pit stops while others I spent some months in attempting to sink roots. Roots did not form or I was only able to produce aerial roots so a tumbleweed type of life has become my mode of living.  Travel is a sort of home. Home as a concept has become very fluid. Like many people I have a gluttony for kilometres and new experiences, I get bored with stability and I have a distaste for possessions. Perhaps this is why I planted myself in a studio at Davis station in East Antarctica over the summer of 2002/03…"

Friday, 27th HEAVEN'S MEADOW by Detlev Neufert
Heaven's Meadow is a documentary about the Baan Gerda village. This community is the first children's village in Thailand where HIV-positive orphans find again a family and a future. They receive the life-prolonging ARV-therapy and grow up similar to ordinary children. For the Baan Gerda kids AIDS is not their fate but a disease which needs to be treated. Heaven's Meadow is a moving film about hope – even if there is no cure for AIDS yet. Could the children's village of Baan Gerda become a future model for other countries?

Sat. 28th of July: LONEGONE by David Eberhardt/USA
"David Eberhardt and Jack Cahill spent seven years riding the rails, asking for spare change and swapping stories around campfires with train hoppers. Their labors are repaid with a mesmerizing documentary full of touching characters and beautiful landscapes…. "Long Gone" poignantly captures a marginalized homeless group for which misconceptions have far too often prevailed and shows that the yearning for community doesn't change much from person to person, even if the definition of community does. EFEO 16th of July 2007 de Gérard DIFFLOTH: Looking for the homeland of Mon-Khmer language

Lundi 16 juillet 2007 / Monday 16th of July 2007

Vous êtes cordialement invités à la présentation informelle

You are cordially invited to attend the informal presentation:

Looking for the homeland of Mon-Khmer language

Gérard DIFFLOTH
Associate Member of the EFEO

Recently, several archaeologists (Higham, Belwood) have tried to revive the idea that Mon-Khmer speaking populations originated in Central China.

However, the Mon-Khmer family (ab. 120 languages) constitutes only one half of the larger Austroasiatic family, the other half, the Munda family (ab. 20 languages) is located in India. We will present a few arguments suggesting that the origins of the Austroasitic family are more likely to be found somewhere on the shores of the Bay of Bengal. Some photos also.

Gérard Diffloth, PhD in Linguistics, UCLA (1968); Professor of Linguistics University of Chicago; Professor of Linguistics and Asian studies, Cornell University. Currently associate member of the EFEO, writing an « Introduction to comparative Mon-Khmer ».

BUILDING A DREAM
Documentary by Nico Mesterharm (Germany)

In February of 1999 the German architect Michael Weiss came to Cambodia for the first time, while on vacation with his wife Veronica. They were fascinated by the ruins of Angkor but moved by the numerous child beggars. Weiss purchased 2.5 hectares of land on the outskirts of Phnom Penh. There he is building a children's village, which has been designed by orphans and vulnerable children under his supervision. "Building a Dream" is a long-term documentary that is following this unique aid program from its beginning. What began, as a child's drawing, will be followed through to the opening of the center on the 1st of December 2007 (World AIDS Day).

Bophana NEWSLETTER JUNE - JULY 2007

On May 25, 2007, the Bophana Audiovisual Resource
Center in cooperation with the Better Factories Cambodia
program of the International Labor Office (ILO), launched
a new photo exhibition "People behind the products – Garment
workers of Cambodia" at a ceremony presided over by His Exc. Cham
Prasidh, Senior Minister and Minister of Commerce.

The exhibition ran until June 15. Its purpose was to show the public what
the workaday world of textile factory workers is all about. Australian
photographer Livingston Armytage used this medium to put a human face
on textile production in this country.

Meanwhile, the ANZ Royal Bank provided support to the Bophana Center
to help it put on the full series of episodes of "At the Factory Gates",
produced under the Better Factories Cambodia program. All photographs
as well as entire series will soon be available for consultation in the
Center's database.

W H E R E A R E W E ?
􀀟 Training in the audiovisual trades is moving ahead. Two French
instructors are providing daily tutoring for four young Cambodian technicians
at the Bophana Center. This has helped them learn about film shooting,
photography, sound pick up, searching, on location filming, editing, and
so on. A synergy was established among the trades, so much so that a
genuine production unit has come into being. The Bophana Center's
audiovisual team is now ready to respond to requests for quality institutional
film productions, news stories and documentaries.

􀀟 The Bophana Center is doing its first documentary on Khmer
cuisine. After five days of filming in Ta Kong village in Kompong Cham
province, the audiovisual team is preparing a 26-minute documentary to
provide a social and historical reading of Cambodian cuisine: recipes
handed down from generation to generation, choices of ingredients and
traditional utensils. The viewer is introduced to the history of dishes and
memories of forgotten flavors while at the same time getting acquainted
with the life of a local family and its background.

􀀟 From July 12 to October 12, the Bophana Center will be putting
on an exhibition by painter Vann Nath. He uses his canvasses to
depict what happened to him in the early months of 1978, from the time
he was arrested by the Khmer Rouge in Battambang until he was
transferred to the Tuol Sleng Prison in Phnom Penh. As an extra, the
exhibition is featuring the painter's memories that were recorded in the
Center's sound studio. In them, the painter comments about his pictures,
thus sharing the process of creating the images that provide both a
memory and tangible evidence of resistance against barbarity.

􀀟 While the Vann Nath painting exhibition is going on, several
screenings are planned, including documentaries and reports on the
Khmer Rouge era taken from the Hanuman database. They will be put on
during July and August in the Paris Eden Cinema Room of the Bophana
Center.
Focus
Getting the Cambodian heritage
message out to the younger generation
Every afternoon the Bophana Center research analyst team
welcomes the public in the consultation area. Mornings are
devoted to planning educational tours for school groups. About
twice a week the Center hosts Cambodian pupils and students in
small groups of 20 as arranged with educational establishments
in Cambodia. Since the Center opened in December 2006,
nearly 500 young people have come in to see the facility.

Raising awareness about the importance of
archive preservation

Depending on the time available, the Center's research analysts
personalize the tour program. Visitors are usually invited to start
with a tour of the current exhibition. For most of these young
people, it's the first time they have ever seen an exhibition. They
learn to take a close look at the pictures or paintings on display
and think about them, reading the captions in order to find
answers to what they may be wondering about. The group then
moves into the projection room for a presentation about the
Center, the Hanuman database and work being done on
archives (collecting, digitizing and indexing). A number of short
documents taken from the database are then put on screen,
depending on what the audience is interested in: the Angkor
temples, fishing, Apsara dancers and the like.
Special showings of feature-length films can also be put on if
requested in advance.

Making the Center's collections accessible
The group is then taken upstairs to the consultation area. Two
students sitting at each station can do their own searches and
view the documents of their choice. Even the youngest visitors
do very well with the computers, even if they are only beginners.
Research analysts are on hand to offer assistance and answer
more technical questions from the older members of the
audience.

The goal is to give Cambodian youth a taste for discovering their
culture and history. We want them to come back again and again
to look at the archives available in the Center. Some of them do
just that, and that's something we're very happy about!
If you would like to support our efforts, if you hold or know of the
existence of documents (video, audio, or photo) concerning not
only the political history of Cambodia, but also the culture,
environment, daily life, health, sport, or religion, please do not
hesitate to contact our team in Phnom Penh or Paris.

14 + 1 - Thursday, French Cultural Centre

Hello,
Since September 2006, I have been teaching history, culture and photography
to Cambodian students twice a week at the gallery I manage in Phnom Penh,
the Popil PhotoGallery. While the class was designed to provide basic
knowledge and photographic techniques, the main goal was for the students to
practice what they learned during the classes and to develop an individual,
photographic project.

The result of our work together will be soon featured at the French Cultural
Center: 14 different photographic works on Cambodia by young Cambodian
people. Please join for the opening of that show this Thursday at 6.30pm at
the French Cultural Center.

This project would not have been possible without the donations and
contributions from many art lovers and supporters, both here in Phnom Penh
and outside of Cambodia. I especially would like to thank the Fuji SPK Photo
Shop on Monivong Boulevard, which has provided all film, development and
prints for the show. It is through their generosity and time that we are
very happy to present this exhibition.

PS: you may have noticed that there is another show opening the same
evening, same time, a Svay Ken paintings and objects exhibition at Java Arts
& Café Gallery. Dana Langlois and I both hope that you can go to these two
openings the same evening to appreciate on both venues (CCF and Java) some
sincere Cambodian artistic expression.

We hope to see you this Thursday at 6.30pm at the French Cultural Center.
Stéphane and all the students in the projects.
