They state: "Phnom Penh is in a stage of intense development. As the country stabilizes, post-war, people are developing the confidence to build, to invest, to trade, and to hope for a much better future." (Until April 22, 2009) Thanks to the Phnom Penh Post for printing the catalogue for this exhibition - see also the attached postcard. Pick up your copy at the opening, pls. All artworks are for sale. First defendant is "Comrade Duch". UK journalist/filmmaker Tom Fawthrop and Helen Jarvis have written the book "Getting Away With Genocide: Cambodia's Long Struggle Against the Khmer Rouge". Tonite Tom Fawthrop presents his rare documentary "CAMBODIA 1989" and other films focusing on the KR legacy. THUR, 02/04, 7 PM VIVA CUBA! Following this February's Cuban Film Festival @ Meta we are pleased to re-screen Tom Fawthrop's documentary SWIMMINING AGAINST THE TIDE (2007, 45min) – a timely reminder of what public health is meant to be all about. Part of tonite's program is the groundbreaking documentary WITH OR WITHOUT FIDEL, that features Cuba's leading politicians, intellectuals and dissidents, who debate the future direction of the island's 48 year-old revolution.... FRI, 03/04, 7 PM GOMORRA Director Matteo Garrone gives a rough portrait of the Camorra, Naples region's criminal network. Inspired by Roberto Saviano's book, the fascinating movie drives straight, and without mercy, toward the heart of the issue, where underdevelopment merges with marginalization, corruption with violence, and where hope seems to have handover to darkness. (Italy, 2008, 137 min.) SAT, 04/04, 7 PM TERROR'S ADVOCATE Powerful documentary by Barbet Schroeder on the controversial lawyer Jacques Vergès, who has defended Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie and super-terrorist Carlos "The Jackal". His latest case brings Vergès to Cambodia. (2007, 135min) SUN, 05/04, 7 PM FOREST NIGHT (Part 1) The April Festival 2009 on Forests, People & Non-Timber-Forest-Products (NTFP) is held in Phnom Penh and Mondulkiri Province. On this occasion award-winning Indonesian filmmakers "Gekko Studio" show their trilogy "Saving the Indigenous Forests From Extinction" @ Meta House. The NGO "Community Forestry International: (CFI) contributes the doc film "Cambodia's Forest Stewards". Films are followed by Q&A with producers/directors Amanda Bradley and Ridzki Sigit. -- Psssst!
