khmarnaval is over

this 2009 khmarnaval edition had been a big succés, a very nice corteggio,, a stage well filed, heavy happy kids.... and my nerves in powder.... that's why following the recommandations ( they were looking more like orders.... ) of the doctor Krupett, i ' ve been send to the deep bush....  for resourcing, refreshing, reinstall..... so just to give a breack to the neuron .... far from any kind of urban activity where the river is mixed with the sky, where the spirit don't wait the night to get out of the forest....
mission accomplished, there i'm back full of energy and wishes and just in time to share with you the last echos of this khmarnaval that did shake kampong som and enjoy the youth....

-           Sophon Phe

-           Peou Sam An

-           Leang Sekon et Carlos Franklin

-           Philippe Chollet

Je serais heureuse de vous accueillir à cet événement, notamment à notre Nuit d'Images le samedi 28 mars à partir de 18h30.

Pour plus de renseignements, je vous joins le dossier de presse.

Cordialement,

Dear META HOUSE friends,

Tonite (6.30PM) we’d like to invite you for the special screening of THE
CHOSEN ONES â€" a new documentary about Jewish musicians in New York City.
Music is a calling, divine or otherwise. For some, the calling is entirely
secular; for others, it is profoundly spiritual.

German musician and filmmaker Wendla Nölle travels to Manhattan and
introduces us to New York’s new generation of Jewish musicians. The film
(2007, 88min) features also the city of New York itself, its frenetic
multiplicity adding a vibrant backdrop to outstanding performances.

Please join tonite or in the following days for CINEMIX â€" International
Films @ Meta House. Best, your MH team

Dear Art Friends!

We'd like to invite you cordially for the opening of the new META HOUSE show
BANYAN PROJECT, tomorrow - Tuesday 10th, 6PM.

The exhibition shows a selection of paintings, sculptures, videos, photos
and installations by 50 artists from more than 20 countries, all inspired by
THE BANYAN TREE. They have been collected by the German media artist Alfred
Banze.

With the collected artworks, he organized numerous workshops for children
and young people in schools, galleries, cultural centers and artists'
studios abroad and at home in Germany. The exhibition displays both, the
original artworks and the workshop results by children and young people.

In April 2007, THE BANYAN TREE visited META HOUSE Cambodia the first time.
Workshops took place at NFC Phnom Penh and Wat Opod Project in Takeo, based
on artworks from Africa, Europe, America, Asia and the Pacific.

The popular Cambodian artist Srey Bandol contributed two of his drawings to
the project, they where "remixed" by students in Guyana, South-America. See
all of this in the exhibition at Meta House.

A BANYAN PARTY with a program of new „art remixes" and performances,
prepared together with children and young people from Wat Opod / Partners in
Compassion in Takeo, takes places at Saturday, March 14, 2009 starting 4 pm

Dear Meta House Friends!

How does GLOBALISATION affect CAMBODIA?

Our "Globalisation Week" at Meta House kicks off with tonite's
presentation of
ZEITGEIST (6.30PM). The "Winner of the Activist Film Festival 2007" is a
highly
critical documentary (2008, 120min) focusing on suppressed historical &
modern
information about currently dominant social institutions, while also
exploring what
could be in store for humanity if the power structures at large continue
their
patterns of self-interest, corruption, and consolidation.

Please visit us also for the following screnings:

WED, 04/03, 6.30 PM SAVE THE KHMER FOREST
Cambodia has one of the world's worst deforestation rates. Between 1990
and 2005 the
kingdom lost 2.5 million hectares. Illegal logging, combined with rapid
development
and population growth, is blamed for it. The doc films PREY LANG by
Jocelyn and Ben
Pederick and CAMBODIANA by Estelle Dorides take you inside the still
existing Khmer
forests. Om Kimsour's film TOMORROW plays in Rattanakiri, where ethnic
minorities
fight for their land.

THUR, 05/03, 6.30PM AT THE FACTORY GATES
The kingdom's garment factories in Cambodia aren't gloomy pits of
Dickensian misery.
Instead, Cambodia is seeking to become the rare Third World country to
develop
economically while treating workers reasonably well. This innovative soap
opera
series by ILO/"Better Factories" was produced to help factories with their
in-house
training, and covers important workplace issues and trains workers on
their rights
and responsibilities. (Q&A after screening)

FRI, 06/03 MH CLOSED FOR RECEPTION

SAT, 07/03, 6.30PM CHANGING THE WORLD ON VACATION
This new documentary by Daniela Kon (2009, 88 min) follows the Cambodian
grassroots
NGO PEPY which built a school for 540 children in a rural village and
supports this
project through "Volun-tourism" - the controversial trend in the modern
non-profit
world that merges adventure tourism and humanitarian aid work.

EXPANDING ARCHITECTURE: DESIGN AS ACTIVISM

STT STUDENT WORKSHOP 2009

EXPANDING ARCHITECTURE: DESIGN AS ACTIVISM

Designers and planners working with communities under threat of eviction

This is the second year of a collaborative workshop with students from various Cambodian Universities and the University of Helsinki spending 3 days looking at the current challenges for design students working in cities affected by forced eviction. Despite the recent world economic problems Cambodia continues to attract investment particularly in economic land concessions  (ELCs) and Special Economic Zones (SEZ). While development is to be welcomed in Cambodia, the use of forced eviction to remove families from their homes without reasonable compensation is causing widespread problems.

How then does the designer/planner respond to this? Avoiding the issue by saying it is not 'design'related is clearly not an option but then how to approach it? The answers are far from simple and in many cases unanswered. This workshop will begin to look at some of the issues and see what Cambodia's urban communities and concerned organisations are doing to confront this endemic problem.
