CHINA ON THE ROOFTOP, TONITE, 6PM @ META

Dear META HOUSE friends,
colleagues and artists,

We invite you cordially for tonite's
CHINESE ART NIGHT @ Meta House Rooftop from 6PM.
Don't miss a night full of surprises….

Short documentaries will be interwoven with presentations by "Lijiang
Studio"-artists/curators Li Lisha (China), Mu Yunbai (China), Joybrata
Sarker (Bangladesh), Oviek Sarwar Photographer (Bangladesh), Oeur Sokuntevy
(Cambodia), Christine Falk (Germany), Jay Brown (USA) and Adrian van Egmond
(USA).

Participants from the Another China exhibition will present the results of
their workshop at Meta House. The theme of the workshop focused on the
journey of the artists to and within Cambodia. The Chinese and Cambodian
artists traveled following the route Lijiang-Kunming-Hanoi-Saigon-Phnom Penh
over land. They all had similar and but also very diverse perception about
the experiences on the trip. Connection between Cambodia and China –
identities and perception. Please be our guests for this discussion about
the trends in the art worlds, coming from Asia.

!!!!!!! Moreover German artist Alfred Banze – who co-curated the on-going
ANOTHER CHINA show at Meta House – will perform/sing together Cambodian
clarinet Bun Hong !!!!!

At 9PM we will screen the heartwarming and award-winning documentary UP THE
YANGTZE by Yung Chang about development and dams in modern China – seen
through the eyes of a 16-year old girl who leaves her family to work on a
cruiseliner. (2007, 109 min.)

HERE'S OUR PROGRAM FOR THE COMING DAYS....

SAT, 17/01, CHINESE GHOST STORY/KUNG-FU HUSTLE
Martial arts films all night is a film genre that originated in the Pacific
Rim, characterized by extensive fighting scenes. This genre has mainly been
produced in China, peaking in the 1970s, and has been dominated by Hong Kong
action cinema. At 6.30 PM we show CHINESE GHOST STORY – the 1987 Hong Kong
romantic comedy-horror film that is regarded as one of the most artful Kung
Fu films ever. 8.30 PM KUNG FU HUSTLE is the highest grossing film in the
history of Hong Kong. The use of visual effects has been widely acclaimed
and the cartoon style of the movie accompanied by traditional Chinese music
is its most striking feature.


SUN, 18/01, 6PM IN THE MOOD 4 WONG KAR WAI
CHUNKING EXPRESS (6PM) is filmed in impressionistic splashes of motion &
color.
At once delicately mannered and visually stunning.
IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (8PM) is a masterful evocation of romantic longing and
fleeting moments in time. The movie also incorporates footage of Angkor Wat,
Cambodia.

MON, 19/01, 6PM "LAND IS LIFE"
Meta House's most recent doc film production: Supported by Germany and the
World Bank, the Royal Government of Cambodia has prepared the pilot project
"Land Allocation for Social and Economic Development" (LASED) to provide
land to landless and land-poor people. The film LAND IS LIFE by Nico
Mesterharm & Ian White shows the process and experiences of the first
'Social Land Concession' in Kratie province.

EXHIBITION OPENING
"ANOTHER CHINA"
Lijiang Studio (www.lijiangstudio.org) welcomes artists, researchers,
scientists and farmers to work in a small Naxi village next to Lijiang in
Yunnan province/China. In cooperation with "Goethe Institute Jakarta" META
HOUSE is proud to present its first collaboration with this unique
artist-in-residency project. In Phnom Penh 12 artists from China, Vietnam,
USA, Netherlands and Germany will present artworks, that have been produced
at Studio Lijiang – within an exciting exhibition curated by Berlin-based
Christine Falk and Alfred Banze (www.anotherchina.de). Sokuntevy Ouer was
the first Khmer artist to travel to Lijiang in December 2008. Her work will
be also included in the show.

PART TWO of ANOTHER CHINA will be opened on January 20 @ 6PM, and run until
January 29. This exhibition will present new works created during the time
of the Another China project. The participating artists will include Mu
Yunbai, Li Lisha, Sokuntevy Oeur, Joybrata Sarker and Oviek Sarwar.

The entire run of Another China at Meta House is from January 13 until
January 29 2009.
