Exposition Em Satya

Em_Satya_Expo_02
Our Books and Meta-House invite you to an exhibition of comic art by Em Satya, on November 6th, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Em Satya is an artist who has worked in nearly every field of illustration. Most foreigners have seen his cartoons as ‘Nono’ in Cambodge Soir, and many Khmer readers have enjoyed his comic adaptations of classics such as Sopaset and Sovannasam.
Now, he presents his first comic in graphic novel format, funded with the help of literary aid project VALEASE.

‘Flower of Battambang’ is a graphic novel set in Battambang and Phnom Penh, shelved when the market for local comics experienced a downturn. Nearly two decades later, Em Satya has taken up his pen and finished the story, which has been assembled into one volume.

The Exhibition will open on November 6th (original art and signed prints will be on sale).

The graphic novel (in Khmer, French and English) will premiere on November 20th.

Les replis de la matière

Exposition Denis Min-Kim
> Vernissage : Jeudi 24 octobre - 18h30

Southeast Asians in the Diaspora Conference: Call for Proposals

Southeast Asians in the Diaspora Conference: Call for Proposals

>
> This two-day conference examines the emerging field of Southeast Asian/
> American studies, which because of specific histories of colonialism and
> imperialism, has produced subjects and objects of analysis that confound
> categories of diaspora, citizenship, and affiliation. Studies of the
> Cambodian,

> Given this, the field foregrounds important epistemological and

> Complicating the examination of nationalisms and transnationalisms,
> Southeast
> Asian/American studies questions the circulation of, the negotiation
> with, or
> challenges to the knowledge regimes of U.S. nation and empire.
>
> In order to explore the dissolution of disciplinary distinctions and the
> complexities of intersectional analyses, we are soliciting papers,

 Under shade of walls...

Shadows sometimes tell more than an old history book. The shades of city's walls are at times unusual or threatening, more often reassuring... Between two buildings, a shadow reminds us the city's greenery or stony sides. Shadows are alike through its blurred outline yet distinguish themselves with its own identity. If they could speak; the city would reveal us its most intimate feelings... Three artists are trying to make the walls from a real or imaginary city speak...

"The Ugly American" Film Screening Sat. Oct. 20 3pm

Dear Friends,

This Saturday October 20, we will be screening the
fourth film in our weekly human rights and social
justice film series at Pannasastra University.

We will be showing THE UGLY AMERICAN, a now rarely
seen political thriller, directed by George Englund
and starring the late great Marlon Brando.

Based on William Lederer and Eugene Burdick's 1958
best seller, the film is set in a fictional Southeast
Asian nation in the early 1960s. Ex-journalist and
liberal Democrat Harrison Carter McWhite (Brando)
becomes the new U.S. Ambassador to Sarkhan, a monarchy
supported by American aid and beset by internal
political strife and a Communist insurgency. McWhite
has a plan to show the existing government's
legitimacy by building a "Freedom Road" to the
country's northern border. While McWhite sees the road
as a symbol of American goodwill, the opposition party
sees the road as a symbol of American imperialism.

Although the film garnered mixed reviews upon its
release in 1963, with some critics calling it
"preachy" and "too political", many contemporary
critics now praise it as one of the most intelligent
and prescient Hollywood films of the 1960s,with many
of its themes having relevance today, particularly in
light of the history of the U.S. involvement in
Southeast Asia and the current war in Iraq.

Brando is outstanding in his role of the beleaguered
Ambassador McWhite. The supporting cast includes
Ejida Okada, the Japanese star of "Hiroshima Mon
Amour" and "The Yakuza", who plays Deong, McWhite's
old friend and the leader of the opposition party;
Jocelyn Brando (Marlon Brando's sister) who plays a
concerned NGO worker; and Kukrit Pramoj who steals the
show as Sarkhan's crafty prime minister. (Kukrit, a
non actor who also served as a consultant on the
project, later became a real life government minister
in Thailand).

Screening time is at 3pm, and the venue is Pannasastra
University Srey Dim Conference Hall, 184 Norodom
Boulevard,Phnom Penh.

The screen is large (by PP standards) and there is
comfortable seating and air con.

For further information please call 012 620 571.

Hope to see you then, and tell your friends!

Dimanche 7 :
18h30 - Lakhaon Apé (Cambodge)
"Soriyak Kheat Chan Kheat"

19h - Ash physical theatre (France)
"Vous n'êtes pas tout seul"
à l'Angkor Village Hotel Ressort& Spa
