RATTANAKIRI TV @ Meta (Tuesday, 7PM)

From: Nicolaus Mesterharm

Dear Film Friends!

The new week at Meta House is starting with a BROADCAST FROM THE JUNGLE: This TUE, 26/10, 7PM we are presenting NEW INDIGENOUS MEDIA FROM RATTANAKIRI. More than 20 distinct ethnic groups are living in Cambodia's isolated mountain areas. In 2010, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) piloted a project to support the formation of Village Disaster Management Teams in Rattanakiri & Mondulkiri. The new documentary "RISING ABOVE NATURAL DISASTERS" (2010, 16mins) by Ian White looks at the process and impact of village team creation, as IOM helped indigenous communities plan and prepare to respond to potential natural disasters. IOM reps will hold a Q&A.

Also screening: "FOREST MOUNTAIN VOICES" – a community media project based in Rattanakiri and staffed entirely by youth from the Tampeun, Jarai, and Kreung tribes.

Pls. visit us also for the following events

WED, 27/10
"THE ART OF STEAL": WHO CONTROLS THE 25 BILLION DOLLAR COLLECTION?

Director Don Argott chronicles the long and dramatic struggle for control of the "Barnes Foundation" in Philadelphia/USA. This private collection is valued at more than 25 billion US Dollars, including 181 Renoirs, 69 Cézannes, 60 Matisses 44 Picassos and 14 Modiglianis. In 1922, Dr. Albert C. Barnes formed this remarkable educational institution. Now, more than 50 years after Barnes' death, a powerful group of moneyed interests have gone to court for control of the art.

THUR, 28/10

The first documentary after KR was shot by famous GDR filmmakers Heynowski and Scheumann. The scenes filmed during spring 1979 are part of history: Phnom Penh left to rampant nature, heaps of skulls and destroyed faces. THE CONSCIENCE OF NHEM EM (2008, 26mins) was nominated for an Oscar. US director Steven Okazaki focuses on Toul Sleng prison photographer Nhem En and tells the story of the havoc, that Pol Pot's reign wrecked on Cambodians.

In "LOUIS AND THE NAZIS" (2003, 79mins) Theroux follows white American nationalists and and singing twin girls known as "Prussian Blue". Para/Site Art Space is pleased to announce the international book launch of Who Cares? 16 Essays on Curating in Asia. For these events the Hong Kong based organisation has teamed up with Arthub - OV Gallery (Shanghai), Taipei Contemporary Art Center (Taipei) and Sotheby's Institute of Art (Singapore) as launch platforms in Asia.

Who Cares? is an anthology that compiles 16 essays on curating art in and of Asia. One of the themes addresses the politics of care, commonly understood as the basic role of curators, with regards to art and artists, across time and contexts. Another theme revolves around markers of success in the realm of contemporary curating. A third recurring theme deals with curating in the globalised art world of advanced travel and communication technologies. A fourth theme reconsiders the audience as active producers in a curated experience. Through a variety of perspectives and literary styles, these texts constitute primary notes towards 'curatorial criticism,' a subfield of art criticism that identifies the new in curating today.

HEY SISTER! Exhibition by female Khmer artists

Heinrich-Boell-Foundation invites you to

HEY SISTER, WHERE ARE YOU GOING?!

Exhibition opening Friday, October 22, 5:30pm – 8pm

At Sovanna Shopping Mall

Street 271, Golden City

Next to Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital, Phnom Penh

Women artists are emerging as a vibrant part of the rapidly developing art scene in Cambodia.  This exhibition brings 11 Cambodian female artists together for the very first time: BUTH Chan Anochea, CHHAN Dina, CHAN Pisey, HIEM An Kanitha, KONG Sovicha, LAM Soeung, NEAK Sophal, NUON Borina, OEUR Sokuntevy, THOU Samoun and TITH Kanitha.

All of these women were nominated as finalists in the INAUGURAL YOU KHIN MEMORIAL WOMEN'S ART PRIZE 2010. All are professional artists, working either as art teachers or designers in Phnom Penh. Included are those finding recent international success, like OUER Sokuntevy, and others whose young talent has been nurtured such as CHHAN Dina and TITH Kanitha.

This exhibition entitled Hey Sister, Where Are You Going?! shows the different approaches of female artists working now in the Kingdom of Cambodia. The women met with curator Lydia Parusol, and Heinrich Boell Foundation three times as a group to discuss issues around the theme. The exhibition organizers chose Sovanna Shopping Mall to be the exhibition venue in order to give the general Cambodian public the chance to experience contemporary art. The aim is to be as close as possible to the public following the moto "To bring art to the people, not the people to art". This exhibition is something of an experiment as very few art projects have been staged in public spaces in Cambodia.

The exhibition is curated by Lydia Parusol, who has worked for four years as the Gallery Manager of META House German-Cambodian Cultural Centre. The exhibition runs from October 22 to November 3, 2010.

If you need more informations and/or photos of the artworks please contact Nico Mesterharm/English (Tel. 010-312 333) or Hem Vanna/Khmer (Tel. 067-867 305).

Cambodian Space Project: A tribute to Cambodia's Vinyl Era - Space Launch!!

A tribute to Cambodia's
Vinyl Era
The Cambodian Space Project launches the first 45rpm vinyl in the kingdom since 1975.

The launch of "I'm Unsatisfied" Chinese House starts 7pm sharp. 6-7pm by invitation.
Be early to catch special guests including "Svay Sar" aka White Mango the 71 year old music legend who has been an active part of the Cambodian music scene since the the 1960's time of Sin Sisamouth.
Founder of Cambodian Living Arts, Arn Chorn Pond may even grace the stage for a rendition of a Sin Sisamouth classic, while, two of the most impressive emerging female artists, Ouch Savy and Srey Sima will join CSP starlette Srey Thy for a special performance of a rare Cambodian Rock song Kraumon Thang Bei - a rare song that featured no less than three iconic Khmer Divas  - Ros Sereysothea, Pan Ron and Ho Meas.

Knyom Mun Sok Jet Te - I'm Unsatisfied - was recorded at Cambodian Living Arts studio and mixed by award winning Australian producer Lindsay Gravina who offered his services after catching a CSP show earlier this year. The superbly packed vinyl pressing is out on Metal Postcard (Hong Kong) and is distributed through legendary UK label Rough Trade. The debut release comes as a milestone for the CSP - In just under a year, the CSP has performed all sorts of venues across the kingdom - from Elephant's Birthday parties to schools and orphanages, villages, river boats and clubs, as well as being the first local band to tour abroad to Hong Kong and France. The CSP's future is looking ever more brighter as the band continues to add new music to its repertoire, completes recording for a debut LP and is set to tour internationally with plans for more touring abroad later this year.

For those in the kingdom without turntables, the CSP single is also available as a digital download and available on iTunes. Ltd edition vinyl copies and launch t-shirts will be available on the night.
