I’m Unsatisfied - Review - The Cambodian Space Project

Single Review

The Cambodian Space Project
I'm Unsatisfied 7"

Article written by Ged M - Aug 8, 2010

The label claims this is the first vinyl single by a Cambodian band since 1975, when the Khmer Rouge killed all the singers (and the teachers, and the doctors and…) in the Killing Fields. There are diaspora bands like Dengue Fever but this is a Phnom Penh-based outfit put together by an ex-pat Australian and including Cambodians and French players, and fronted by the incredible voice of Srey Thy. It's a culture clash of sorts – they play like the 5,6,7,8s but their sound is faithful to the spirit of the 60s/ 70s music that itself was a fusion of traditional Khmer songs and the rock'n'roll imported by GIs. 'Knyom Mun Sok Jet Te (I'm Unsatisfied)' is staggering, from its warped psych-rock to the unearthly vocals of Srey Thy, who stays true to the spirit of singers like Ros Sereysothea and Pan Ron (who originally wrote this). 'I'm Still Waiting For You' is another mindfuck, with lyrics by another dead Khmer pop legend Sin Sisamouth played over the tune to 'House of the Rising Sun'. The incredible picture disc imagery just rounds it off nicely. If you've ever heard any of the Cambodia Rocks compilations, or just want an out-of-body experience, you'll find this perfect.

Swing News Update

Dear Swingers,

I have some bad news and some good news.  PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD TO ANYONE ELSE YOU KNOW.

The bad news is that for the first time since I started teaching swing in the Penh, I regret that I will have to cancel the regularly scheduled classes both this Thursday and the next.  Something has come up at work that I cannot get out of, and I am truly sorry for this.  HOWEVER...there is also GOOD news.

Marco has graciously offered to move the furniture out of our dance space at Equinox so that I can teach the Beginners' class there for the next two weeks.  The catch is, the class won't start until 8:30.  So, head on over to Equinox at the usual time, and I will start the class as soon as I can get there.  I may be a few minutes late, but you can have a drink until I arrive.  For those of you who have been a bit shy, this will be the perfect opportunity for you to come out to Equinox and see just how much fun it is.

So, just to review:  Advance class is cancelled this week and next.  The Beginner class will be at Equinox from 8:30-9:30, upstairs.  This of course will be followed by social dancing until the last person is left standing, as usual.  If any of you advanced dancers want to reschedule another time, we can plan something.

Also, this Sunday is.........SWING SUNSET AT SNOWY'S!!!  Remember, Snowy gives drink specials!!!  Let's get some good practice in before the BIG SWING OUT WEEKEND!

Speaking of which...here is the schedule so far.  Some details are not set in stone as of yet, but the dates and times of events will most likely stay the same:

Thursday Exhibition Opening: "Phnom Penh Bars and Beyond..."
A painting exhibition by David Richards
Thursday, September 9th 2010 from 7:00pm. Exhibition runs until September 22nd.

Opening on September 9th, 2010 from 7:00pm.

Live music with the Cambodian Cowboys from 9:00pm.

David Richards has depicted some of the best and most iconic bars in Phnom Penh in this sexy and striking new exhibition. Snowies, Talking to a Stranger, Led Zeppelin, Heart of Darkness… and the Chinese House are just a few of the bars featured in this exhibition, which will also feature some more exotic paintings by Mr. Richards.

David Richards was influenced by his mother’s sketches and paintings since childhood, and started painting with her encouragements at the age of 5 years old. Frequent visits to the museums of Cincinnati and New Orleans’ inspired him to pursue a career of Fine Arts in college. His curiosity and maturing passion lead David to take as many courses as possible, ranging from drawing and graphic design to oil painting and sculpture, and ceramics and silversmithing.

Inspired by Gaugin, Rousseau, Gustav Klimt, Vermeer, Edward Hopper and Carravaggio amongst others, David Richards, started experimenting with water-color paint in California, but its only when he moved to Maui in 1986 that he immersed himself completely in his work. David painted everyday, often working on several projects at once, excited about the process of seeing his work being built over time. His early painting from Maui in Hawaï, evolved around nature: oceans, jungle settings or sea life, but Richards then started a very popular series of paintings on mermaids.

He has kept the sensuality and eroticism of these paintings in his new body of work “Phnom Penh Bars and Beyond”, which depicts the contemporary night scene in Phnom Penhs most notorious bars. His stay in South East Asia uncovered a fascination for decaying architecture, from French Colonial Buildings to old Chinese architecture, which also strongly features in his work today.

From 9:00pm:

There’s a new sheriff in town.
A couple of high plain drifters have pulled into Phnom Penh from the snow capped mountains and deserts of Kampong Cham. It’s the Cambodian Cowboys! Be ready for a mix of rhythm and blues along with a mix of swing and soul.

Our City Festival 2010

 Our City Festival 2010

Now in its third year, the Our City festival of 2010 has once again
brought together members of the arts community to celebrate and
stimulate dialogues on the theme of architecture and urban design.

For this year's festival, several events have been lined up
including "Imaginary Home," the second architecture competition
hosted by the French Cultural Centre; "Hawker's Song," a
video/sound installation, created by JavaArts and Greyspace;
photography, painting, architectural studies, film screenings and
talks. See the complete list below. Newcomers to the 2010 edition
include the Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center, The Vann Molyvann
Project, Heritage Mission and Sahmakum Teang Tnaut.

A new feature this year is a webpage that includes a calendar of
events, profiles and a blog on the activities
(http://www.javaarts.org/ourcity
) both in English and Khmer. Updates on events and additional
programming will be listed there.

Our City, a JavaArts project, works through a network of arts
organizations to build programs and events locally as well to initiate
international collaborations. Our City is exploring how to further
engage the public in future events and projects around questions of
globalization, architecture and urban design.

Life Along the Rails

Artist: Conor Wall, in collaboration with Sahmakum Teang Tnaut

Local urban NGO Sahmakum Teang Tnaut together with photographer Conor
Wall showcase a disappearing lifestyle from along the Kingdom's
railways. As the tracks are rehabilitated and trains are set to run
regularly, the lives of people living next to the rails will be
transformed. Some will have to move, while others face a new reality
where the tracks can no longer be used as public space. The exhibition
creates a memory of what used to be.

6pm Thursday, 16 September, 2010

into one building structure.

of contemporary architecture projects from the region.

Architecture in Cambodia: The Golden Age of the 50's

Conference

Speaker: Khun-Neay Khuon

architectural adventure in Cambodia during the decade that followed
the country's independence. A notable personality in the fields of
architecture, urbanism, and national heritage, Khun-Neay Khuon will

throughout the country.

Venue: The Cinema at the French Cultural Centre – No. 218 Street 184

Imaginary Home

Architecture competition/exhibition opening

Last year, architecture students conceived plans for an "Arts Park,"
something that is sadly lacking in the capital. Reflecting on current
trends in real estate development in the capital, for this second
competition, the country's future architects have been invited to come
up with construction plans for 450 living spaces on the shores of the
Tonlé Sap. A dream that we will all be able to share during the
exhibition of the resulting models and announcement of the winners of
this year's competition.

7pm Thursday, 30 September, 2010

Venue: French Cultural Centre - No. 218 Street 184

Vann Molyvann and the New Khmer Architecture

Exhibition opening

The 1950's and 60's were a time of great creativity in Cambodian art
and architecture. The legacy of this era includes an extraordinary
collection of modern buildings, which have come be known as the "New
Khmer Architecture". The author of some of its finest work is His
Excellency Vann Molyvann. Many of Vann Molyvann's most important
buildings have been demolished—and virtually all the original design
documents are lost. The drawings, photographs and models in this
exhibition aim to reconstruct a historical record of the original
design intent of selected projects.

7pm Thursday, 30 September, 2010

Venue: French Cultural Centre - No. 218 Street 184
