Peace Monument Made of Decommissioned Weapons in Kampong Thom Province

A Peace Monument made of de-commissioned weapons will be handed-over by the Japan Assistance Team from Small Arms Management in Cambodia (JSAC) to the Provincial Government of Kampong Thom on September 27, 2007.

The Monument, named "World of Peace", was created by Cambodian artists Sophon Samkhan, Choup Sopheak, Khem Sambo, Tan Vanno, Yen Entareak and Vong Daravy, with the artistic support of Sasha Constable and the technical support of Development Technology Workshop (DTW). The sculpture is 3.5m in height, and will be permanently installed in a public park "Children's Park" in Kampong Thom Provincial Town.

The Peace Monument was created under a Japanese Government Assistance Program "Peace Building and Comprehensive Small Arms Management Program in Cambodia", which is implemented by the Government of Cambodia and JSAC. The weapons used to create this monument were surrendered by the residents of Kampong Thom Province under the joint cooperation of government offices, police, Cambodian NGOs and JSAC. The weapons were later destroyed in public ceremonies "Flame of Peace" in the Province.

The handover of the Monument will be preceded by a "Peace Declaration" to mark the completion of JSAC support for weapon collection activities. The Declaration would be announced by the District Governors, which will affirm their responsibilities in maintaining peaceful, safe, and weapon-free communities. The Monument will be a symbol of such commitment and hopes of the Cambodian people, as well as the extraordinary creativity and talents of the Cambodian artists.

The Ceremony will be held on September 27 (Thu), 2007 at 10:00 AM at the Provincial Hall in Kampong Thom Provincial Town (please see map). We would appreciate the presence of all who are interested, and especially all of you who have contributed in peace-building and arts in Cambodia.

FWD: Bosbapanh sings Bob Dylan in Khmer: watch TV9 at 5:30 pm today !

BosbaPANH sings Bob Dylan

at Art Café - Phnom Penh

Watch TV9 "Eyes on Cambodia" at 5:30 pm

Monday 17 September 2007

BosbaPANH has performed last Saturday with other artists at Art Café in a tribute to Bob Dylan. She played in Khmer and English the famous song "Blowin' in the Wind". She was accompanied by her younger brother Panhlauv, age 7 and Chan Kiry.

How  many  years  can  some  people  exist before  they're  allowed  to  be  free?

How many deaths will it take till he knows that too many people have died?

The answer, my friend,  is blow-in in the wind....

"Blowin' in the wind" was composed in 1962 when Bob Dylan was 21. In the midst of the Vietnam War and segregation in America, this protest song became the symbol of a generation. Today, sadly, one continues to ask these questions... How many times can a man turn his head pretending he just doesn't see? the answer my friend is Blowin' in the wind.

What's On Email

From Tim, the latest 'What's On' email:

Hello!

It's Friday, which means that it's time to send out events... two days late. Whoops!

You know how sometimes you get off a boat and you aren't used to walking on land... well I feel that way about excel spreadsheets now, I am getting a bit nauseous not writing in small cells right now. Been a lot of late nights curled up with big financial projections for the Cartier Women's Initiative Awards finals. Yes, even though I am not a woman I am able to help PEPY, my NGO, participate.

Which brings me to my personal plug for an event this weekend: The Pants Party or Excuse to Drink B/C It's Someone's Birthday Whom We Probably Haven't Met But Strangely Emails Me Everyday Wednesday (or friday) With Events and Ramblings With Capital Letters. Lets just call it the Pants Party. Come in tight pants, funky pants, MC Hammer pants, no pants, pants on fire. Pantsless partygoers will also be accepted and possibly rewarded. Those with chaps will not be admitted, sorry for the inconvenience. Come meet new people, enjoy Saturday!

Meta-House Update

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SOKUNTEVY OUER "WISHES FROM MY PAST"
Exhibition Opening on Wednesday, September 12, 6PM
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

During her first year in  Phnom Penh Sokuntevy Oeur has been quite productive, by any measure. Her 3rd exhibition in 10 months, titled "WISHES FROM THE PAST", opens at Meta House on 12th of September.

Yet it is never the quantity of artwork that is most important, but rather the quantity that matters. That said, the level of execution and the breath of topics in Sokuntevy's work is impressive. Also interesting is her refusal to repeat herself despite earlier success with a particular series of work.

For this new exhibition the artist jettisons her previous neo-traditional crafted imagery for a new restless expressionist pop style. This technique better serves her goal of exploring her memories of childhood and adolescence in Battambang. She can paint directly and vigorously on the handmader paper which best reflects the intense level of her memory. Saturated colours, sensuous figurative shapes and psychedelic background vibrantly replay her personal dramas for the viewer.

Sokuntevy is a rare individual in the Cambodian Contemporary art scene for a multitude of reasons: she is a woman, she is young, she lives independently from her family and, most crucially, she is outspoken and unrestrained. By swinging from coffee-saturated exquisitely rendered traditional imagery to sexually charged oil on canvas figures to voluptuous players in her life story painted in exploring colours she clearly betrays her fearlessness.

While she is still emerging at 24, not technically trained and not copy or demure this promising artist has undeniably arrived. In the present cultural climate of Phnom Penh this all adds up some exciting and incisive image making from this tiny but powerful artist from Battambang.

Bradford Edwards, Phnom Penh 2007
