SA SA BASSAC is pleased to announce the opening of The Halo of the Omnipresent Eye by Than Sok, a solo exhibition presenting interactive sculpture and installation through which the artist seeks to provoke questions around the practice of monetary almsgiving in Cambodia while playfully drawing connections between the roles of monastics and artists.

In Cambodia, where Buddhism co-exists alongside pre-Buddhist animism and Brahman practices, both monks and artists have long occupied a unique position in the transmission of Khmer culture and values; monastic discipline has provided a living model of the most meritorious Buddhist behavior, while artistic practice has been regarded as visionary and with spiritual associations.

Although some monks commit to permanent vows, monkhood in Cambodia is traditionally considered a right of passage in which young males are expected to serve temporary terms intended as merit-building activities for parents. Due in part to a shift in almsgiving practices in which laity replace food with cash offerings - a practice antagonistic to precepts meant to prevent monks from indulgences including the handling of money - many young men can now consider monkhood as an opportunity to escape poverty, relocate to urban centers, participate in secular education, and are seen as participating in laic life before disrobing. Still, alms remain a central practice and symbol of the sangha, or Buddhist community, and provide the opportunity for givers to earn merit for a better rebirth.

Than Sok deliberated the monkhood-for-opportunity model, and served three months as a novice assistant, during which time he was offered what he considered a more favorable opportunity: to become an artist through the offering of the Reyum Art School in Phnom Penh. Since graduating in 2005, his artistic practice has investigated the materials and rituals of spiritual practices in his country.

The Halo of the Omnipresent Eye stages the artist's own alms scenarios in the gallery. To Give Is To Receive I and II (2012) reconfigure materials and forms used in exchanges between monks and laity. The pair of alms stations are presided over by representational halos associated with divine knowing – a reminder that intention, the source of good or bad action, which is invisible, is "visible" via its karmic effect.

To Give Is To Receive I concentrates on alms made to the temple. A colorful LED moiré light glows in the eastward direction onto a field of humble sand mounds – forms representing Mount Meru, the mythical axis of the Hindu world - which are built outside temples during major Khmer ceremonies. Money and other paraphernalia are slid into the sand mountain for which the person is released from sins and can request prayers answered. To Give Is To Receive II focuses on alms made to the individual monk. Suspended from the ceiling, a sole light bulb hangs in the center of bamboo hoop; its "rays" are made from the bright red cotton string, which monks tie to the wrists of laity as a general blessing, and connect to a ring of eight bat lok, or alms bowls. Playfully, the artist asks viewers to perform almsgiving, for which they will, by level of intention and belief, receive merit from supporting the artist.

About the Artist

Than Sok (born 1984, Takeo) investigates religious and spiritual beliefs, materials, and rituals through sculpture, installation, video and performance. Than graduated from Reyum Art School (2005), Reyum Workshop (2007) and is currently studying architecture. Select exhibitions include Tragedy, Bophana, Phnom Penh (2009), Forever Until Now, 10 Chancery Lane Gallery, Hong Kong (2009) and Video: An Art, A History, Singapore Art Museum (2011). Than was a resident at Tokyo Wonder Site (2005) and S-AIR, Sapporo (2011). His work is collected by the Singapore Art Museum.

Dear all

It is with pleasure that we have a nice announcement to share with you: during more than one year we have established new contacts, multiplied the meetings and discussions with a broad variety of institutions and key research actors in Cambodia. The result finally paid a huge does of involvement and motivation: our Human Sciences Happy Hours is about to reborn anew!

As you know the Human Sciences Happy Hours in Phnom Penh came to life in Octobre 2008. Since then the network never stopped to grow. It now blends together an interesting mix of fields, backgrounds and levels (anthropology, history, sociology, archaeology, psychology, geography, linguistics, urbanism, criminology, political sciences… from Masters to ongoing PhDs, from confirmed academics to experimental voices…). In a continuous attempt to share research outside its walls and to bring it to the society, the door is always open to non-researchers, coming to seek for knowledge. Today almost 500 researchers and other actors (mainly from the development world) are part of our network. Each monthly event gathers 30 to 50 individuals coming to open a new window on the country, but also to build knowledge otherwise often isolated in Cambodia.

This network now presents a real platform for Social Science research in Cambodia. It has become a forum of numerous exchanges and collaborations and it provides the mean for all to share information and publications in this field.

So what's next? What changes are we talking about?

1. The network will be soon take venue at the Royal University of Fine Arts (RUFA) linking history of humanities in Cambodia to present, welcoming a fresh start and innovative collaboration.

2. The HSHH are now integrated in a new project of master of human and social sciences at RUFA (a project lead by IRD, CNRS, INALCO, UNESCO and RUFA.

3. The HSHH activities are now going to be associated with IRD (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement) and will receive some funding from this collaboration.

4. In order to open the floor to our non-english speaking colleagues, we now invite all researchers willing to present their work in any other language they feel comfortable with.

5. We get a brand new name to celebrate those changes! The HSHH now become the:

And in case you didn't know it before (but we are quite sure you did already!) you are all welcome to continue to join us! We are always looking for new sharers of thoughts: presentations, research papers, impulsions and new ideas are what we feed on! (That and fresh water and love of course!).

This is a first step for us to ensure that the network can survive and keep its activities and bubbling encounters alive. Soon to come, the expansion of those activities! And now and forever (yes, we do apply a long term perspective!), YOU are to shape this network by your participation!

We welcome (no, we call on to!) all new energies and good spirits willing to join us!

About Nguyen Manh Hung:

Nguyen Manh Hung has become a major influence in the current art scene in Vietnam since graduating from Hanoi Fine Arts University. He is the former curator and artistic director of the Nha San Studio. Hung is known for bringing a fresh, original perspective to the visual arts in Vietnam. While focusing on paintings, he makes sculptures, installations and performances. Hung started his own style in visual activities as a surrealist.

Hung recently completed his latest work Living Together in Paradise at the Goethe Institute in Hanoi. This ambitious project created a diorama to surround a meticulously hand-built, three-meter tall model of a residential housing block.

Hung has exhibited at the ifa gallery (Stuttgart and Berlin, Germany), San Art (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam), the Stenersen Museet (Oslo, Norway), Ethan Cohen Fine Art Gallery (New York, USA), Nha San Studio (Hanoi, Vietnam), the Ke Center (Shanghai, China), and has participated in various other international exhibitions and festivals. He has received grants from the Ford Foundation, the Dong Son Today Foundation, and the Asian Cultural Council, and has done residencies in Ghent, NY, and New York City, NY.

Crime and Criminal Violence in Cambodia: A Historical Perspective

Dr. Thierry Bouhours

Empirical studies and theoretical analyses of long-term trends in criminal violence have been done in western countries but rarely in other parts of the world. The research conducted by Dr Bouhours and Prof Broadhurst attempts to fill this gap through an examination of the evolution of crime and criminal violence in Cambodia from the start of the 20^th century to the present. Different sources and methods of criminal data recording were used between 1900 and 2008 and the diversity of these sources and recording methods presents complex and challenging measurement problems. The types of available data are presented, and how one should understand, compare, and interpret them in order to produce a valid estimate of the evolution of criminal violence in Cambodia during its colonial and post-colonial history is discussed. Preliminary results are presented and, drawing from functionalist and conflict macro-social criminological perspectives, patterns of criminal violence during the modern history of Cambodia are analysed.

Dr Thierry Bouhours holds a PhD in Education and Criminology from Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia. Since January 2007, he has been working with Professor Roderic Broadhurst on the Australian Research Council (ARC) project Building Rule of Law Capacity in a Transitional State: Lessons from the Australian Criminal Justice Assistance Programme in Cambodia. In 2009, Thierry Bouhours joined the ARC Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security at the Australian National University, Canberra. As part of the ARC project, Thierry conducted a crime victimisation survey in Kampong Cham and archival research at the Phnom Penh archives and the Archives d'Outre Mer in Aix en Provence. Thierry also supervised a Cambodian doctoral student, Dr Chenda Keo, who examined human trafficking in Cambodia focusing on offenders. With Professor Broadhurst and Ms Brigitte Bouhours, Thierry is currently completing a monograph on a modern history of crime and criminal violence in Cambodia.

Open Cities is a live, site-specific performance based upon the live,
real-time manipulation of sounds and images from the streets
surrounding the performance venue. FIRST (AND MAYBE ONLY) PERFORMANCE
IN PHNOM PENH.

For each concert, a microphone and video is placed directly outside of
the venue, gathering ambient noise and passing visuals. The show is
then created entirely from these live feeds without the use of
prerecorded material, remixing and distorting them into experimental
beats and rhythms that respond to specific sonic and visual qualities
of each site.

This process is made possible by software programs designed and built
by David over the past year as part a research project supported by
Sound&Music, one of the UK's leading contemporary music institutions.
Previous performances of Open Cities include appearances at Future
Places (Porto), Novara Jazz Festival (Milan) and Corsica Studios
(London).

David Gunn is the founding Director of Incidental is a creative
organisation specialising in cross-disciplinary creative work that
explores notions of identity, sound and site. In the past 6 years,
Incidental has completed a variety of projects in the UK, Europe, Asia
and the US, with a diverse output including live performances,
largescale installations, software design and site-specific
interventions commissioned by a variety of organisations including
Opera North, Futuresonic Festival, Asian Development Bank, Arnolfini
Gallery, Manchester International Festival, Arts Network Asia,
Fundacao Serralves and The New York Lower East Side Tenement Museum.
Current projects include creation of multi-touch music software app
(FEED) and collaborations with Cambodians artists / musicians to

About the Talk

Janet Chan's talk will introduce audiences to a number of strategic aspects of Asia Art Archive's projects and programmes since its foundation in 2000, with focus on how AAA's various research initiatives set up framework for its collection development and public programmes, and ultimately, how AAA envisions itself in networking/mapping the region. Than Thanaren, head of archiving at Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center, Phnom Penh, will translate and moderate the evening.

About the speaker

Janet Chan joined Asia Art Archive (AAA) in 2007 to serve as its first Research Coordinator. Key projects she has administered over the years include: AAA Research Grant (2007 onwards); AAA Residency Programme (2007 onwards); 'October Contemporary' (2008, 2009); and 'Action Script: Symposium on Performance Art Practice and Documentation in Asia' (2010). Her major duties include coordinating the archive's Research+ Team, currently stationed in research posts in 6 Asian cities, and working closely with the Head of Research+ to develop in-depth research projects, public programmes, focused collections, and to oversee overall acquisitions of the archive. Janet is currently supervising a number of AAA's digitisation and archiving projects in the region.

Janet earned a master's degree in new media art studies at the University of Hong Kong, Department of Comparative Literature, in 2004. In addition to AAA, Janet has been proactively engaged in a number of independent art initiatives such as wrongplace, a Hong Kong-based research collective (2008 onwards) and GuLLDY, an artist collective committed to exploring open-source applications in media art (2003-2007).

Than Thanaren is currently Archives Department Manager at Bophana Audiovisual Resource Centre in Phnom Penh. She earned a Masters degree in Media and Cultural Project Management, European Center for Research, Training and Education in Digital Media, INA'Sup, France (2010) and a Bachelor's degree in French Literature, Royal University of Phnom Penh/RUPP (2002). Than has Diplomas in Journalism, RUPP (2002); French Professorate, Foreign Language Institute Cambodia (2002); English Media + Culture Communication, Pannassastra University, Phnom Penh (2004); Audiovisual Research Analysis, Audiovisual National Institute, France. Than has contributed to many notable projects including as Project Executive on Indexing the Radio Collection of His Majesty the King Father Norodom Sihanouk, Audiovisual National Institute, France (2009). She has directed or produced both documentary and feature films and contributed papers to international conferences including both the Second and Third Asian Seminar on Audiovisual Archives.

After the series entitled "Look at me !" and "Don't be shy !" where he began his experiments in khmer calligraphy, Thang Sothea wished to create, a whole series to deepen his close relationship between the painted object and its typographical representation and also to expand its range of play with the signifier and the signified.

In this tribute to the Khmer writing that he used to distort and animate from childhood through to school, he pushes the limits of this calligraphy on the path to the ideogram, the pictogram and even the hieroglyph.

His approach, therefore, is not only one form for all the paintings, but also a unique background, Cambodia.

The theme is explored through several variations: family, arts (dance, theater, music), religion, social life and tradition, urban bustle, nature ... within each treatment there is humor and irony that always breaks through ill-concealed tenderness for his country and its culture ..

A multisited study on the evolution of transnational institutional entrepreneurship

Abstract

This study questions in what ways first generation Cambodian French returnees evaluate their activities aimed at the reform of Cambodian institutions. This subject is linked to the societal debate on the ways in which institutional entrepreneurial activities, for instance, the work of (inter)national aid organizations, may impact the development of an emerging nation. Arguments are developed from the history of Cambodian exile and return and three case studies collected during multisited fieldwork in France and Cambodia. Findings propose that theory places too much emphasis on the positive uses of social capital and on the positive effects of institutional entrepreneurs' multiple embeddedness.

When he regained consciousness, he was diagnosed with brain damage. As he tried to put his life back together, Hogancamp came up with an unusual hobby: Using G.I. Joe action figures and Barbie dolls, Hogancamp created an elaborate scale model community in his backyard that he calls "Marwencol". US filmmaker Jeff Malmberg profiles Mark Hogancamp and the world he created from toys and his imagination in the documentary MARVENCOL (2010, 83 mins) which was premiered at the 2010 South by Southwest Film Festival. …

Swedish filmmakers David Aronowitsch and Staffan Lindberg have followed him two years before his arrest in 2007 for their documentary FACING GENOCIDE (94 mins, 2010, English/English subs). 7PM: BOYFRIEND (2011, 15 mins. English subs) by the film collective "Kon Khmer Koun Khmer" (Cambodian Films, Cambodian Generations) is a fiction film about a spoiled relationship between a father and a son. 7.30PM: The highly entertaining film BANG BENG, THE INTELLIGENT FARMER (2011, 49 mins, English subs) is directed by Chum Reap and features a fresh cast of Cambodian actors. Through Bong Beng's comical competition with a fellow suitor for a farmer's lovely daughter's hand in marriage, Cambodians can better understand how rice productivity improves the lives of growers. Also screening: Chum Reap's thriller WHO KILLED RUMDOUL (2010, 45 mins, English subs).

CAMBODIAN WATERWAYS: WHERE HAVE ALL THE FISH GONE?
7PM : Cambodia's two dominant geographical features are the Mekong River and the Tonle Sap - the largest freshwater lake in SE Asia The Mekong sustaining the lives of 65 million people is under dire threat from hydro-electric dams. It's unique ecosystem is unlikely to survive the impact of Cambodian dams in Stung Treng and Sambor. The screening of Tom Fawthrop's new film WHERE HAVE ALL THE FISH GONE? (21 mins, 2010, English subs) is is followed by Peter Degen's breathtaking documentary MEKONG THE MOTHER (2006, 60 mins, English subs). Christophe Gargiulio's documentary LAND OF THE LAKES (2008, 48 mins, English subs) was commissioned by the NGO World Fish Center. Filmmaker will attend the screening abd hold a Q&A.

Daniela Kon's debut film CHANGING THE WORLD ON VACATION: NGO VOLUNTEERS AND THE POLITICS OF COMPASSION (2008, 87 mins) is inspired by own experiences volunteering with NGO's in Thailand, India, and Cambodia. She investigates the moral complexity of development work and the personal and political boundaries of sustainability. Amit Dubey is an Indian American who was working as a Software Engineer, and his passion for cinema drove him to start making films with his childhood buddy Gokul. Their most recent project is a Spanish fantasy-fiction short called "AFTERLIFE", which they shot in their Latino neighborhood in San Francisco. Filmmaker will attend the screening (Q&A). NEW VIETNAMESE CINEMA: "BI, DON"T BE AFRAID" & "THE TERRACE"
7PM: In recent years, as Vietnam's film industry has modernized and moved beyond government-backed propaganda films, contemporary Vietnamese filmmakers have gained a wider audience. Vietnamese Director Phan Dang Di's first feature film "BI, DON'T BE AFRAID" (2010, 90 mins, English subs) won two of the International Critics Week's prizes at 2010 Cannes Film Festival. The story of a dysfunctional family from Hanoi is told from the perspective of the 6-year-old son Bi. The role of the father is played by Vietnamese actor/filmmaker Nguyen Ha Phong. Phong will hold a Q&A after screening and present his short film "THE TERRACE" (2006, 14 mins, English subs).

"RED WEDDING": FORCED MARRIAGE AND RAPE UNDER KHMER ROUGE
7PM: Between 1975 and 1979, at least 250,000 women were forced into marriages by the Khmer Rouge. The documentary RED WEDDING (2011, 58 mins, English subs) is produced by Rithy Panh's Bophana Center and directed by female film maker Chan Lida (31). She decided to shoot the personal story of Pen Sochan, who was forced to get married and raped when she was just 16 years old. "People have never talked freely about it because it is likely to embarrass the victims. I think this film will encourage victims to talk about their own stories as well as to transfer the message to the next generation," says the director. Chan Lida who will hold a Q&A after screening.

"SEVEN MURDERS FORGIVEN": BOLLYWOOD'S BLACK WIDOW
7PM: Susanna is dark, magical, evil to some and mysteriously charming to the others. She also harbors a secret, known only to her and her faithful companions. Will her ever-lasting quest for love ever come to an end? Vishal Bhardawaj's high-glossy thriller/black comedy 7 KOON MAAF/SEVEN MURDERS FORGIVEN (2011, 137 mins, English subs) is based on British/Indian author Ruskin Bond's book "Susanna's Seven Husbands". It was premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival 2011. 2,500 people watched the screening on the last night of the festival, and later gave the director, cast and crew a standing ovation. Be our guest for Bollywood's latest art house flick!

Artist Panel: Evolving Traditions
To mark the closing weekend of Ouk Sochivy's solo exhibition In The Club, please join us for a stimulating panel on evolving traditions in painting and dance. Moderated by Chum Noy, a select panel of artists will share their inherited practices and discuss why and how this knowledge is foundational to their work today. Enjoy demonstrations and short videos in preparation for a finishing hour of club culture as the Gallery becomes a dance hall!

Ouk Sochivy is a painter best known for her playful, figurative works of Khmer youth. Exhibitions include To Be Continued, Bophana Audiovisual Resource Centre Gallery, Phnom Penh (2009), Farmers and Freshies, Sa Sa Art Gallery, Phnom Penh (2010); and Forever Until Now, 10 Chancery Lane Gallery, Hong Kong (2009), Svay Ken: A Tribute, Java Café and Gallery, Phnom Penh (2009), and her current solo exhibition In The Club, SA SA BASSAC (2011).

Sophiline Cheam Shapiro is a choreographer, dancer, vocalist and educator whose original works have infused the venerable Cambodian classical form with new ideas and energy. As one of the first generation to graduate from Phnom Penh's Royal University of Fine Arts (RUFA) after the fall of Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge regime, she became a member of RUFA's faculty until she immigrated to Southern California in 1991 where she studied dance ethnology at UCLA and established Khmer Arts Academy in Long Beach, expanding her organization to Phnom Penh in 2006 where she is Artistic Director. Shapiro was awarded the National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2009. Her choreography with Cambodia's finest performing artists tours internationally.

Belle Chumvan Sodhachivy began her dance training in 1994 at the age of 9. She gained a baccalaureate degree with a focus on classical dance in 2003, before graduating from the theatre production / choreography program at the Royal University of Fine Arts in 2007. She has been actively engaged in international performance and choreography workshops and festivals since 2003, and was the inaugural artist in residence at Cambodia's French Cultural Center in 2009.

Chum Noy is a cultural worker based in Phnom Penh. She has degrees in French and Journalism and has experience as Professor and Interpreter of French as well as radio and television broadcasting and production. She joined Bophana Audiovisual Resource Centre for five years as Research Analyst, then Cultural Events Manager. Chum was awarded the ASEAN Youth Culture award in 2003, the ASEAN Young Photographers Award in 2007, and the apexart residency, NY in 2009.

Memory, emotion and violence in the context of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal

This talk discusses the first findings of a research in Cambodia that is part of a larger comparative research project exploring emotion, memory and violence in post-conflict societies. The aim of this research is twofold. Firstly, we ask if and how tribunals and/or truth commissions can initiate new or revive old forms and practices of remembering the violent past and what kind of emotions are articulated in these processes on different societal levels (national, civil society and local, collectively and individually). We also ask if and how these different levels may or may not interact and influence each other. But besides that Sina Emde is also interested in local forms and practices of remembering ,b e.g. ancestor rituals, storytelling etc. and ask how these are practiced in relation to the memories of the violent past.

This research was multi-sited and focused on the court proceedings of Case 001 of the ECCC itself, former Khmer Rouge prisons and mass killing sites in the capital and Takeo province. Except for the museum Tuol Sleng, all sites have memorial stupas displaying bones and skulls of victims, who were murdered at the sites. All of these sites are investigation sites of Case 001 and Case 002 of the ECCC.

Sina suggest that these Cambodian memorial sites and spaces are memoryscapes where the collective and the individual, the public and the personal interact, where individual memory and national history can enter the same discursive space thereby creating polyphonic and polysemic spaces of remembering. Furthermore, these memoryscapes articulate and embody different facets of remembering: agency, politics, materiality and emotion. However, all this takes place within the context of a hegemonic national politics of memory and state historiography that aims at the construction of a nation of victims of a few "senior responsible leaders" and "forgets" the complex shifting ambiguities and subjectivities of victim-perpetrator divisions that have occurred over 30 years of violent conflict in Cambodia.

Please join us for an evening of conversation with artist, writer and curator Viet Lé, who will discuss his current project boy bang/, a new music video trilogy about fake Asian boy bands and solo performers in various personas and costumes which examines the borders of spectacle, desire and audience. Through the creation of faux boy bands and stars, Lé questions the boundaries of community and identity.

This event is made possible in part by a grant from the City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs.

Viet Lé's artwork has been exhibited at the Laguna Art Museum, USA; DoBaeBacSa Gallery, Seoul, Korea; Cape Museum of Art, MA, USA; The Banff Centre, Alberta, Canada; Ethan Cohen Fine Arts Gallery, New York, USA; Shoshin Performance Space, New York University; among other venues. His work has been featured in numerous anthologies. Lé has received fellowships from the Civitella Ranieri Foundation (Italy), Fulbright Foundation (Vietnam), the Center for Khmer Studies (Cambodia), and the Fine Arts Work Center (USA). Lé obtained his MFA from the University of California, Irvine, where he has also taught Studio Art courses, and is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Southern California. www.vietle.net

This presentation addresses the sale of Vietnamese children in Cambodia. My goal is to explore this issue embedded in stereotypes, and to move beyond the anti-trafficking discourse. To do so, I privilege the actor's viewpoint (emic perspective), colonial literary and legal sources. Data for this paper was gathered in 2009-10 through fieldwork conducted in Châu Đốc (on the Vietnamese border) and among the Vietnamese communities in Phnom Penh (Cambodia). It is presented with a discussion of a number of methodological barriers encountered in the field.

Firstly, the discussion with a mother who sold her daughter explores the motivations, conditions and prices of Vietnamese children sold in the Cambodian market. These sales can be validated by a deed that includes the price and the name of both the seller and the buyer. Similar contracts found in reports and press clips from the colonial period prove that the same practice is carried out despite the temporal spacing: the "sale of a child for adoption" (bán làm con nuôi). It therefore demonstrates historical continuity in terms of human sale.

Secondly, I will describe how emic representations help to justify acts that are absolutely condemned by the State, but that are justified by some destitute social groups due to their particular context: a desperate mother who does not want her child, and decides to get rid of him to retrieve some money. The famous novel When the light is out by Ngô Tất Tố (1939) depicting the story of a destitute mother who eventually sells her daughter to pay off tax debts and to free her husband, illustrates how desperation can excuse immorality and social condemnation.

Finally, Vietnamese informants tend to suggest that girls are more expensive than boys because parents not only take into account the wellbeing of the child with his adoptive family, but also consider the return on investment. Indeed, destitute daughters can work in prostitution; therefore they can remit higher sums of money to their parents than boys. A calculation takes place thus suggesting that for poor families involved in child sale, raising a girl means investing into the future.

This talk summarizes a chapter from the forthcoming Alliance Anti-Trafic' Research Report: Nicolas Lainez (June 2011), Transacted Children and Virginity: Ethnography of Ethnic Vietnamese in Phnom Penh, Ho Chi Minh City, Alliance Anti-Trafic Vietnam.

Nicolas Lainez was born in 1975 in Barcelona, Spain. He's currently enrolled in a PhD program on social anthropology at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris). He is researcher for the NGO Alliance Anti-Trafic Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City), and associated researcher at the Research Institute of Contemporary Southeast Asia (Bangkok). His research focuses on cross-border mobility, human transactions, informal credit, debt-bondage, commercial sex, social structures, and the social construction of trafficking from the colonial to the contemporary period. His 30-months' ethnography is based in the Mekong Delta (Vietnam), Phnom Penh (Cambodia) and Singapore.

Cet article se propose de revenir sur la mort, suite à un mouvement de foule qui eut lieu le 22 novembre 2010, de plus de 350 personnes sur le pont d’un grand projet urbain privé actuellement en construction à Phnom-Penh. Il s’agira pour nous, à partir de ce drame marquant, de souligner certaines dynamiques contemporaines de la construction des espaces urbains de la capitale cambodgienne. A travers le grand projet de l’Île des Diamants, nous souhaitons interroger le rôle des grands promoteurs immobiliers dans la fabrication de la capitale. Pour ce faire, nous évoquerons l’internationalisation des modes de construction en Asie du Sud-Est et au Cambodge qui se caractérise par un retrait de la planification urbaine et une multiplication des projets urbains privés. L’exemple de l’Île des Diamants nous permettra d’illustrer certaines grandes tendances de l’urbanisation à Phnom-Penh. Nous montrerons comment l’évolution du discours sur la ville moderne génère des antagonismes au sein de la politique urbaine actuelle, et interrogerons la capacité des grands investisseurs immobiliers à fabriquer des espaces urbains pérennes.

Through this article, we would like to underline few main dynamics of the contemporary urban development of Phnom‑Penh after more than 350 people died on Diamonds Island, a new private large scale project under construction. The Diamonds Island project questions the role of the large scale real-estate investors in the fabrication of the urban space. We will get onto the evolution of the internationalization of the production of the urban space. By this end, we will be able to replace the “urban project” within the institutional and historical local reality. Through the particular example of the Diamonds Island, we will approach the evolution of the urban modernity understood as a marketing strategy. Finally, the Diamond Island tragedy reveals the antagonisms of the current urban politic and interrogates the capacity of the private investors to construct a sustainable city.

Please join us for an evening of conversation with artist Amy Lee Sanford (née Ly Sundari), a Cambodian-American artist working primarily in mixed media sculpture and installation. Her work frequently addresses the evolution of emotional stagnation, and the lasting psychological effects of war, including aspects of guilt, loss, alienation, and displacement.

At Brown University, Amy studied art, science, and engineering. She furthered her studies at The Rhode Island School of Design, University of Massachusetts/Dartmouth and Harvard University. While in Boston, MA, she started up an artisan company, where she designed and fabricated handmade, tessellated, porcelain tiles and mosaics for residential and commercial interiors. She has exhibited in London, New York, Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Boston, MA, Providence RI, Long Beach CA. She currently resides in Phnom Penh, and is working on a new body of work.

SA SA BASSAC is pleased to announce Remember, a solo exhibition by Yim Maline. Remember presents four achromatic interpretations of the artist's childhood memories, in which the playful and the unsettling coincide.

Maline's rigorous practice spans media and scrutinizes the complexities of freedom. Growing up after the official fall of the Khmer Rouge, Maline's childhood years are considered politically "free". While she remembers laughing and playing – innocent actions restricted just years before her birth - she notes the contraction of being surrounded by ongoing violence, utter poverty and the dilapidation of social infrastructure.

In her essay What is Freedom?, Hannah Arendt writes: "The experiences of inner freedom are derivative in that they always presuppose a retreat from the world, where freedom was denied, into an inwardness to which no other has access." Maline reconciles her past through the inwardness of imagination, by calling something into being which did not exist before. She states, "War is difficult. We want to be free but we don't know if it will be granted to us. Being an artist allows me to grant my own freedom; if there is something I don't like in reality, I can re-imagine it in my work, and remain playful and curious like a child."

Maline turns her family's poor dinette into an eerie playground. Dinette (2010) is a sprawling floor installation of dirt scattered with three hand-built, unglazed ceramic objects in series: knives, bowls, and bones. The knives only seem sharp and the bowls are rendered useless - punctured by the artist's aggressive hands and echoing detonated cluster bomb shells. The bone shape is taken from "dolls" the artist created as a child using leaves of a k'plaugh tree. New Face (2010) is a collection of eight rough plaster masks attached to the wall. The artist cast pieces of a face repeatedly, after which she anarchically pieced together the parts to reflect the disjointed nature of life during and after war.

The centerpiece of the exhibition is a four-meter-long sculpture of a kite entitled Hope (2010). Kite-making and flying survived decades of cultural censorship during the Khmer Rouge. Maline remembers flying kites, especially at the end of the monsoon season and the beginning of the dry season – a time filled with hope for a rice harvest. Among the large-scale kites is the Khleng Ek. Commonly flown at night, the Khleng Ek is unique for the haunting sounds from the ek - a curved bamboo rod at the head of the kite. In the artist's adaptation, the customary kite is built of ceramic rather than the typical light and durable materials of silk or paper. Hope defies one's expectations of a vibrant and celebratory recreational object. Heavy, black and silent, Hope's fragile, ceramic tails rests on the floor, its flight a mere illusion.

Scar 1-4 (2010-2011) is a series of large, meticulous graphite-on-paper drawings in which the artist has imagined explosions of organically shaped rice clusters. She says, "In Cambodia, like most of Asia, we work for rice; our bodies are built of rice." An explosion indicates a necessary release of pressure. The peculiar explosions in Scar are symbolic of a time to open, to travel, to learn. The title however is a reminder of something that never goes away.

About the Artist
Yim Maline was born in Battambang in 1982 and is currently based in Siem Reap. She studied art at Phare Ponleu Selapak, Cambodia (1995-2003), and received her Diplôme National Arts Plastique (DNAP) from École Supérieure des Beaux-arts, Caen la mer, France (2010). She has participated in numerous exhibitions in France and Cambodia. Remember is Yim Maline's first solo exhibition.

On June 29, 2009, Neda Agha Soltan was shot and killed on the streets of Tehran during the protests that followed the Iranian presidential contest. Recorded on mobile phones, images of her dying moments appeared on computer screens within hours across the world via social media sites YouTube and Twitter. Iranian opposition groups broadcast the video via YouTube and Twitter to rally support around the globe. The documentary touches on Neda's life and the events that lead to her death along with the efforts of social media activists to get the message out.

Though unsuccessful, the protests which were dubbed "The Twitter Revolution" by journalists was the first major world event broadcast worldwide almost exclusively via social media.

After the screening, the OPCC will host a panel discussion on social media and it's growing impact on journalism.

Thousands of manuscripts have thus been preserved throughout the Kingdom before recently being digitized and put on line with assistance from the government of Singapore and UNESCO. An earthquake of magnitude 9.0 hit eastern Japan on 11 March. The number of death and the missing is over 24,000, and the tragic toll is expected to rise further. Even two weeks after the dreadful disaster, food, water, electricity, fuel, and means of communication remain all scarce commodities for many of the survivors in emergency shelters. The livelihoods in extensive areas in eastern Japan are virtually shattered.

As Japanese NGOs working in Cambodia, we wish to put together voices and support from Cambodian people and deliver them to the people of Japan. Japan has a long history of supporting Cambodia. Following on from the second 'Pop-Up Art Space' which took place Saturday 26^th February near the Night Market (Phsar Reatrey), Kong Vollak invites you to participate in a talk and discussion with him about his practice, and his recent experience of working live in a public space.

For the second Pop-Up Art Space, Vollak created new charcoal drawings and photographs from his on-going series which feature both old and new buildings around the capital.

This live process was filmed and the results were simultaneously projected onto a wall. Vollak invited the people of Phnom Penh to participate.

Vollak's work is rooted in his own experience of living in the city. He explores its changing physicality and probes the social and environmental impact of a new landscape.

'(Re)-drawing the city' aimed to blur the boundaries between public and private space and pose questions about the impact of a changed aesthetic in an urban environment.

Tonight (Wednesday, 2nd March) from 6PM we open Jaya Krishnan's beautiful exhibition "KHMER COLOR FIELDS" at Art Cafe with a special FREE concert by "KANDRIM" musicians from Thailand (8PM).

The earliest Khmer music form is preserved in Thailand's provinces S'ren, Srisaket and Buriram, home to millions of ethnic Khmer. Cultural resurgence among Thailand's ethnic minorities is most visible in the area of popular culture. Kandrim also undergoes a transformation from its folk music origins into a commercialized folk-rock genre. The musicians came a long way to perform at Meta House. Please give them a warm welcome.

Malaysian Jaya Krishnan attended Kuala Lumpur College of Arts from 1974 to 1979. He lives in Ottawa/Canada since 1979. Growing up in a tiny town in Malaysia 50 years ago, his life was a constant struggle. Jay's interests these days is exploring human conditions and the environment with affectionate empathy. Phnom Penh's hustle and bustle, sounds and sights have inspired him to produce new works in Cambodia.

Between 1964 and 1975 the United States of America military dropped 2,756,941 tons (230,516 sorties on 113,716 sites) of bombs across politically neutral Cambodia. This figure went unacknowledged until 2000 when Bill Clinton traveled to Vietnam and quietly released previously classified Air Force data on American bombings in former Indochina.

Dissatisfied with the level of documentation produced on the subject, Vandy Rattana traveled to the ten Cambodian provinces most severely bombed in the U.S. military campaign during the Vietnam War. Along the way, he engaged villagers in locating and testifying to the existence of the craters made by the bombings, known in the Khmer language as the "bomb ponds".

The resultant work is a series of nine quiet, mysteriously serene landscape photographs and a confronting one-channel documentary film in which villagers describe their memories of the bombings as well as their relationship to the ponds today. The Bomb Ponds invites audiences to connect with both the fragility and the resilience of the people and the land, and to reconsider the historical thread of America's actions during the Vietnam War and subsequently, similar acts of violence worldwide.

Born into the tenuous recovery period after the official fall of the Khmer Rouge, Vandy Rattana (b.1980 Phnom Penh) is concerned with the lack of physical documentation accounting for the stories, traits, and monuments unique to his culture. His serial work employs a range of analog cameras and formats, straddling the line between strict photojournalism and artistic practice. The extensive nature of his subject matter forges against the plethora of stymied documentation on Cambodia today, and makes critical connections between present-day narratives and the historical value inherent in chronicling the contemporary moment.

The translation of Angkor Vat for the Universal and Colonial Exhibitions in France

(1889 - 1937)

Angkor Vat temple from the 12th c. in Cambodia is the largest religious stone monument in the world. Despite its massive architectural structure in situ, Angkor Vat is one of the most "travelled" objects in Southeast Asia through its reproduction in models and moulds. This phenomenon is tightly linked with the modern notion of nation building, the invention of the concept of cultural heritage and the increasingly commercialised cultures of display. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Angkor Vat became the most important monument and archaeological fetish in the French mission civilisatrice of the Indo-Chinese Protectorate: its surface was copied through the technique of moulding and transferred for scientific study and display to the new-found Parisian Musée Indochinois and after being partially reconstructed for earlier World Exhibitions, it reached its most spectacular transcultural translation in the 1:1-scale model for the state-propagandistic Colonial Exhibition in Paris in 1931.

Dispense with any heart-shaped expectations, this exhibition is not
your typical celebration of love. Featuring the work of Oeur Sokuntevy
(Tevy) and Nicolas C. Grey, LOVE LUST AND LOATHING explores the darker
and more complex aspects of love. Negotiating ideas of love and loss,
togetherness and loneliness, and the capacity of feeling to build or
destroy, this exhibition provides a pause for thought amongst the
traditions and romantic paraphernalia of Valentine's Day.

Tevy presents an autobiographical series of work, which tells the
story of a former relationship and her current one. Whilst she has
often referenced herself in her surrealist images, these works on
paper which have never previously been exhibited include literal
representations of herself for the first time. Through her unerringly
honest and direct style, this series evokes the raw emotion of being
in a relationship and of its demise.

Nicolas C Grey's work draws you in to his fantastically imaginative,
contemplative world. Both his portraiture and wall sculptures are far
from conventional comments on love, romance and attachment. His use of
portraiture, some including the use of passport photographs, are
products of his deep grappling with what constitutes personal
identity. They are immersed in the sinister, bleaker aspects of
humanity, where love may seem to be absent, ambiguous, and associated
with suffering.

LOVE, LUST and LOATHING provides a cautionary tale of romance and the
fear involved of giving and receiving too much or too little both in
love and in life.

For the opening, the children's room playroom will be transformed into
a fortune teller's saloon, where a clairvoyant will be on hand to
provide you with love predictions, if you dare...

"Meta" means "loving kindness", "Karuna" means "compassion" in Khmer language. On the occasion of Valentine's day we like you to show compassion and kindness to 1480 inmates of Kampong Cham's CC3 prison.

SUNDAY, 13/02, from 6PM, Meta House hosts the charity event "ROCK'N ROLL SHARING SMILES": HELP CAMBODIAN PRISONERS!" featuring Khmer pop stars Yani, Boy and Ena, actress Kol Davy, 60's movie star Dy Saveth, famous singer Ek Side and eight Cambodian fashion models. Khmer youth will dress up in original 60's fashion and dance the night away.

On the rooftop we screen documentaries about prisons worldwide such as LOUIS THEROUX'S "BEHIND BARS" or STAN FEINGOLD'S "PRISONERS OF AGE".
NGOs and aid workers are asked to hold short presentations about the realities in Cambodian prisons.

An invitation is attached.

We ask for a donation of USD 2. The money will be used to buy soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste for the prisoners. On Valentine's Day (Monday, 14th) we will drive to Kampong Cham and hand the goods over to them.

Southeast Asia and World History

January 2-4, 2012, Siem Reap, Cambodia

The World History Association, in conjunction with Pannasastra University of
Cambodia, announces a symposium on the world-historical significance of
Southeast Asia. The symposium seeks to generate dialog among scholars within
and outside of the region regarding its place in world history. It seeks to
identify those world history processes that have application to the region's
past, present and future and stimulate discussion of world history
methodology and pedagogy in the Southeast Asian context.

Among the topics that may be addressed at the symposium are: the nature of
world history; the processes of indigenization, localization, and
syncretism; the decline and fall of classical societies; Diaspora and gender
studies; the colonial experience; nationalism; conflict and post-conflict
studies; trade; economy; religion and culture; art; regional questions in
global perspective such as borderlands; regional diplomatic relations;
investment, tourism and resource management issues; the environment;
comparative genocide; and models for World History and global studies in
terms of scholarship and instruction. These topics are examples only and
should not be taken to exclude proposals on other topics. Scholars from all
disciplines are encouraged to submit proposals. Select refereed papers from
the conference will be published in the e-journal "World History Connected"
(University of Illinois Press) and a book project is planned.

The conference will be held minutes from the Archeological Conservation Area
that includes Angkor Wat. Pre/post and concurrent symposium activities will
be structured so as to permit tours of these and other local sites which
connect them to the wider region and the world.

Panels will meet in air conditioned rooms on the newly-built Pannasastra
University of Cambodia's Siem Reap campus. The time limit for presenting
papers will be 20 minutes, and the deadline for submitting papers to the
session moderator is three weeks in advance of the conference. Individual
paper proposals must include a 100-200 word summary with the title of the
paper, name, institutional affiliation, e-mail address, phone and fax
numbers, and brief curriculum vitae, all integrated into a single file,
preferably in MS-Word. Proposals for entire sessions or panels must contain
the same information for each participant, as well as contact information
and a brief C.V. for the moderator if you suggest one. (The program
committee can help find moderators, if necessary.) There is a limited
number of AV-equipped rooms available so it is essential that you indicate
your need for audiovisual equipment (and what kind) in your proposal. All
meeting rooms are air conditioned.

Please send your completed proposal with the following in the subject line
of the email: WHS, followed by Your LAST NAME (family), and then Your First
name, then short paper/panel name to the WHA Symposia coordinator, Maryanne
Rhett, at mrhett@monmouth.edu.
Individuals wishing to moderate a session should send a statement of
interest, contact information, and a brief C.V. to the program coordinator.

The deadline for the submission of paper and panel proposals is September
1st, 2011.

All panelists must register to be on the program.
The language of the conference is English.
A rolling acceptance process will be in place to assist panelists to solicit
travel support from their home institutions and organizations.

Unfortunately, the conference does not have funds to subsidize scholars'
travel and lodging at the meeting.

Registration rates, benefits of registration for WHA members, and waivers
for Cambodian teachers, in-service Teachers Across Borders members and
others will be posted on the WHA registration site shortly.

for registration information, low-cost housing options and both conference
and optional touring logistics information (to be posted shortly). Excellent
inexpensive lodging, food, shopping and entertainment are all available
close to the conference site. Local transportation is available in the
range of $2.00 per ride and can be arranged for $20.00 for an entire day.
The weather in Siem Reap in early January is ideal: dry with cool mornings,
high in the mid 80s at mid-day. Siem Reap is famous for its Pub Street
district, a five minute walk from the conference site. It features sidewalk
restaurants, cafes and shops; most visitors make evening strolls there a
habit. Siem Reap still has the flavor of a small town, albeit flooded with
both backpackers and traditional tourists whose presence has led to
widespread spoken English and Western-style supermarkets. Heath and crime
issues are minimal (See State Department advisories and your travel medicine
specialist before undertaking any travel). Tourist visas are inexpensive.
Siem Reap's international airport is serviced by a variety of airlines from
most Asian hubs. Most international travel passes through Bangkok's
international airport. Because of the International Dateline, attendees
departing January 4 will be able to make connections permitting
participation at the American Historical Association in Chicago later that
week.

In one of the projects, architecture students took the lead in in mapping and surveying communities under threat of eviction in Stung Meanchey. In the second project, a youth group developed an upgrade plan for Sen Rikrieay relocation site, as well as worked with the community to conduct some upgrades. "Animism in Cambodia: Bioregionalism in Practice

The indigenous or "highlander" people of Northeast Cambodia have traditionally been animistic ecosystem-based cultures whose way of life is a perfect manifestation of what is called "bioregionalism" in environmental studies. Extensive knowledge of local ecology, ability (and strong desire) to live autonomously and sustainably, and a keen awareness of "spirit places" –these are some of the defining features of bioregionalism and the Brao, Tampuan, Bunong and other highlander groups of Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri provinces have copious amounts of all three. During one month of homestays, interviews and treks to "sacred" forests, mountains, and lakes with different indigenous guides and families a picture emerged that will be of interest to bioregionalism and environmental studies scholars. In an ecological milieu haunted by malevolent spirits, the highlander people of Northeast Cambodia have lived in relative symbiosis with nature, that is, until the arrival of large numbers of economic migrants, agricultural plantations and foreign companies looking to cash in on untapped resources. These outsiders, often with the collusion of government officials, are threatening to extinguish the unique animist cultures that have thrived (despite repeated disruptions and turmoil) for centuries. This paper seeks to examine these issues from a bioregional perspective, emphasizing that the highlander cultures of this region are a great source of knowledge for living dynamic and sustainable lives in one's own eco-region.

7PM: Jakarta, Indonesia. Five young Indonesian documentary filmmakers tell stories from the streets of a megacity, where so-called "illegal members of society" occupy public spaces to make a living. PORK OR CHICKEN, RHYTHM OF A DAY, WANDERERS, FRIDAY LUNCH and BOT… PARABOT (2008/2009) introduce you to the daily lifes of city dwellers, their struggles, dreams and deceptions. Screening is followed by FOUR SHORTS FROM THE FACTORIES. Young Cambodian filmmakers focus on garment factory workers in Phnom Penh. Migrating from rural areas they find themselves displaced from their origins and family. Through their remittances these women often crucially contribute to the education of their siblings.

The music production company "Chameleon Music" proudly introduces you to their talented new singers Yani, Boy and Enna, who have just released their first CD with original songs. Enjoy their free Christmas concert as well as a groovy dance performance by "Da Fly Group". 8PM: The feature film "SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT" (2009, 107mins) is based on a true story. A young German journalist falls in love with a Khmer bar girl, who is HIV-positive. The film is screened in Khmer version with English subtitles. Moreover we show the trailer, which documents the Cambodian premiere screening as well as the "making-of".

Ever since opening in 2000, our goal at Java Café& Gallery has been
to innovate, aiming to offer quality food and show contemporary art in
a relaxed and friendly context. The biggest compliments you could pay
us have always been that you had lingered over a good meal because you
felt right at home or that you had found an artwork on display amazing
or challenging.

For Java Café& Gallery, quality and comfort go hand in hand, which
has meant providing customers with seating areas in which they would
feel welcome to spend hours, and serving food and drinks made from
scratch with the freshest ingredients.

With a program ranging from exhibitions and artist talks to fashion
shows and live poetry, Java enjoys linking art and entertainment in

Penh festival organized by the French Cultural Center, and artworks

HERBERT VON KARAJAN, SCHUMANN AND "THE TENTH DANCER"
6.30PM: Austrian Herbert von Karajan (1908 –1989) was described as "the world's best-known conductor and one of the most powerful figures in classical music". In the mid-1960's Karajan collaborated with French film director, Henri-Georges Clouzot. The documentary ART OF CONDUCTING (1965, 90min) follows the rehearsal and the performance of Robert Schumann's "Symphony No.4".

8PM: Khmer Arts Ensemble presents the film "The 10th Dancer" with an introduction by Toni Phim-Shapiro. The riveting documentary is an intimate portrait of the relationship between a teacher and her pupil set against the backdrop of war torn Cambodia. The film weaves between the past and the present, memory and dream, to reveal a story of human dignity and survival.

DEATH AND REBIRTH: CAMBODIA'S PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
6PM: "Komitu" is an architectural workgroup from Helsinki, Finland. Its members are currently designing a youth center in Phnom Penh in collaboration with a local NGO, Cambodian Volunteers for Society
(CVS). They will hold a presentation for local students and architects, as well as the expat community.

7PM: The first documentary film (1979, 90min) after the Khmer Rouge was shot by famous GDR filmmakers Walter Heynowski and Gerhard Scheumann. The scenes filmed during spring 1979 are part of history: Phnom Penh left to rampant nature, heaps of skulls and destroyed faces. The reports from the survivors are moving and harrowing.

In the gallery Uy Thach, El Leang and Anton Isselhardt perform the "Vienna Serenade" by legendary Geman composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 –1791). His music is considered as the archetype of Western Classical Music. The admission fee of 5USD includes a drink.

At 8PM we are hosting a free screening of the riveting documentary WHEN YOU ARE STRANGE by award-winning writer-director Tom DiCillo. Narrated by Johnny Depp, the film uncovers historic, previously unseen footage of cult rock band "The Doors". It focuses on lead singer Jim Morrison (1943-1971), from the formation of the band in 1965 to Morrison's death, after years of alcohol and drug use.

Hey,

The gig guide has a slightly new look now - I have split the gigs into sections that are entitled by the day of the week and the date - I hope it is an improvement.

The live music scene is not only expanding in terms of the number of bands but also in area. This week sees gigs in Siem Reap, Kep, and Kampot.

The Kampot gig is the outdoor concert put on by the Cambodian Space Project. The concert will occur at the village of Seyma (just over the river from the main town not far from the Boddhi Villa) and will involve the band plus an array of other singers and performers spanning the afternoon and deep into Saturday night and Sunday morning. If you are needing transport down there then a bus has been arranged which will leave from the riverfront (in front of La Croisette) at 9:00AM on Saturday morning and return by 6:00PM the following day.

In Siem Reap this weekend you can catch not only the half-marathon but also Phil Manning who will be at the FCC Angkor and Los Poporks who will be playing on pub street in front of the Banana Leaf. They should be two totally great gigs and I urge you to catch them if you are a local live music enthusiast or if up there for Sunday's run.

At Robiep continue their tour of Cambodia in Kep at the Kukuluku Bar and hopefully might make an appearance at the outdoor concert in Kampot - since it is only just down the road ;o).

Other great gigs this weekend include the Bluesberry Jam who will make their return gig at MetaHouse. Also, if you are in Phnom Penh over the weekend then you can catch the Stiff Little Punks at The Cavern as their expanded line-up is being filmed by a German TV crew for a documentary.

The FCC Phnom Penh and Chow continue their support of the live music scene with a series of 7 gigs for December. Cool!

If it is a great DJ party you are looking for then Rubies Masked Mischief party with Dr. Wah Wah will be totally worth catching on Saturday night.

They are the compelling and utterly alarming account of the lives of girls and women affected by the virginity trade that exists in Cambodia today.

Attention, music lovers! This Friday (3rd) at 8PM we are hosting an exclusive live concert by the American band BLUESBERRY JAM in cooperation with Kingdom Breweries. Their "TRAVELING MEDICINE SHOW" features upbeat songs from the tradition of Folk, Blues, Jazz, and other "Roots" music.

Medicine Shows were a popular form of entertainment all throughout America during the 1800's and the precursor to later traveling circuses, carnivals and vaudeville shows. "Patented" herbal potions were pedalled by unscrupulous salesmen, which gave rise to the infamous "Snake Oil Sellers" who flourished during this era. A collection of laminated vintage "Medicine Show" posters is on display in our "Art Café" from 6PM.

7PM: Double Bill with two award-winning documentaries. US filmmaker Steven Okazaki has been nominated for four Academy Awards. His film "The Conscience of Nhem En" (2008, 26mins), which was nominated for an Oscar in 2009, focuses on Toul Sleng prison photographer Nhem En and the few survivors. Barbet Schroeder's stunning documentary TERROR'S ADVOCATE (2007, 135min) is a history of world terrorist movement as told through the story of the enigmatic lawyer Jacques Vergés, who is defending Khieu Samphan at the ongoing KR trial in Phnom Penh. The famous French director takes us down history's darkest paths in his attempt to illuminate the mystery behind Vergés.

Narrated by Johnny Depp, the riveting documentary uncovers historic, previously unseen footage of cult rock band "The Doors". It focuses on lead singer Jim Morrison (1943-1971), from the formation of the band in 1965 to Morrison's death, after years of alcohol and drug use.

Winner of this year's "Sundance Festival", this remarkable documentary (2009, 93 mins) is a personal journey into the heart of darkness by journalist/filmmaker Thet Sambath, whose family was wiped out in the Killing Fields.

Nuon Chea aka Brother Number Two breaks a 30-year silence to give testimony never before heard or seen. This is investigative journalism of the highest order. Thet Sambath awill attend the screenings (Q&A).

'As a photojournalist I like being somewhere else but I hate travelling. I mean the process of travelling... So how do you solve that contradiction? You pick a country you came across when you were still hopping from one plane to another and you settle down there. There are several advantages: chances are you'll be less superficial in your reporting, you avoid spending hours in airports and crappy hotels, you spend less money on travel expenses, you get to see your children grow, and your carbon footprint is trimmed down by at least 3/4...

So which country? There are many reasons, but there is no reasonable explanation. In my case it was Cambodia in 1989, 1991, 1999 and I stayed in 2000. It could have been Vietnam or Berlin... But here we are, 20 years later...' – John Vink
